The victims of The Station nightclub fire are going to get some free financial advice to help them manage the settlement money they will be getting in the coming months. The Station Family Fund in collaboration with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors is sponsoring a day-long workshop May 30 at the Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel in Warwick to help the survivors of the catastrophic blaze --and those who lost loved ones in the fire -- deal with money and social support issues. The conference runs from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is open to adults who are awaiting a pay-out from the $176-million pool of money that has been offered to end the personal-injury suits the victims have filed in U.S. District Court in Providence. Those who wish to attend must pre-register by calling the Phoenix Society at 1-800-888-2876 (ask for Christine) or by signing up on-line at www.stationfamilyfund.org/events.html. The keynote speaker is a nationally renowned certified financial planner, Susan Bradley, founder of the Sudden Money Institute, a resource center for new wealth recipients and their advisers. Bradley helped train financial planners who provided pro-bono services to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Lawyer Jonathan Bell, a partner at the Boston law firm of Greenberg Traurig who has provided free legal services for Station Family Fund since it creation, said last week in an interview that the fire victims need assistance dealing with money issues. "They need to learn how to manage money when and if it comes and what not to do," he said. Bell said that the workshop will also offer "needs assessment" for those seeking social and psychological help. |
