PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Roger Williams Medical Center Friday announced it has won $5.9 million to study how breast cancer patients' own cells can be modified to fight advanced stages that otherwise would have no treatment. The Impact Award from the U.S. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program is believed to be the largest breast cancer research grant ever received in Rhode Island, according to a statement issued by the hospital in advance of a 10 a.m. news conference. By using gene therapy to alter T cells, which have the capacity to hunt down diseased cells anywhere in the body, the research offers hope for curing breast cancer that has metastasized into other organs, according to Dr. Richard Junghans, the chief of surgical research and principal investigator on the grant. |
