Rhode Island will receive nearly $3 million to help clean up diesel emissions from state vehicles and to clean up leaks from underground fuel tanks. The funding was announcedThursday morning by the state's congressional delegation. A total of $1.73 million to retrofit diesel engines in state-owned cars, trucks, school buses and other vehicles will come from the $300 million set aside for clean diesel activities nationally by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The bill also has $156 million in competitive grants for diesel reduction programs that the state can apply for. The state will receive $977,000 for underground fuel tank cleanups -- funds that also come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. As of last October, the state Department of Environmental Management's Underground Storage Tank Management Program reported that there were 254 cleanups remaining to be completed in Rhode Island. |
