PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- One of the youngest students to ever earn a bachelor's degree at Rhode Island College will receive her diploma in May, along with 1,400 undergraduates and graduates. Also at the undergraduate commencement ceremony held May 16, former RIC President John Nazarian will receive an honorary doctor of public service for his 54 years of service to the state's oldest institution of higher education. Elizabeth Codd, 18, of Barrington, began her studies at RIC in 2002 at age 11. She is the second-youngest degree recipient in the 155-year-old college's history. Codd will graduate with a double major in mathematics and music, with a 3.9 grade point average. Anne G. Murphy, a 1959 RIC graduate and president of a Washington DC consulting firm, Linkages, will receive an honorary doctor of humanities. Murphy will deliver the address at the undergraduate commencement, which begins at 9:30 a.m. May 16, and will be held on the college esplanade. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Murray Center. Philanthropist, political activist and businessman Mark S. Weiner will receive an honorary doctor of public service. Morris Nathanson, an internationally-known designer and historic preservationist based in Providence, will receive an honorary doctor of humanities. Nathanson will deliver the address at the graduate commencement in Roberts Hall Auditorium, which begins at 5:30 p.m. May 14. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Congratulations to Elizabeth, I love hearing these stories. Still more proof of what kids can do when given a little freedom. My best guess is that she was a homeschooler. So was I and I'm getting my bachelor's this year at age 20. Guess she's got me beat!
There's no school like home! :-D
