Chafee forms committee to explore run for governor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee has announced the formation of an "exploratory campaign'' for the 2010 Rhode Island Governor's race.

According to a statement issued this morning, "Chafee will spend the next several months meeting with advisers and supporters putting together a plan that will lay the groundwork for an Independent campaign for governor in 2010. ''

Through a spokesman, the Republican-turned-independent Chafee also announced the appointment of former Bank Rhode Island businessman executive vice president and chief business officer James V. DeRentis as manager of the 2010 Chafee for Governor exploratory campaign.

Effective immediately, "DeRentis will be responsible for overseeing the exploratory campaign, which includes such activities as fundraising, potential campaign structure and building an advisory team,'' the statement said.

"We are at a pivotal moment in our state's history, and I am to excited to establish a team that will help create a platform to help elect a candidate who has the proven experience and leadership ability to unite Rhode Islanders at a time when divisiveness has hindered our state and prevented us from reaching the potential we know we can achieve," said DeRentis. "I firmly believe that Linc Chafee has demonstrated the kind of bold leadership and inclusive decision making that makes him a different kind of candidate," he added.

Since December of 2006, Chafee has served as a visiting fellow, at the Thomas J. Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. In the summer of 2007, Chafee officially left the Republican Party.

The statement was issued by Andrew Cutler, a one-time public-relations consultant to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation.

Is this a late April fools joke? When Chaffee was in office, his only accomplishment was shaking hands, with especially the older generation who did so, having remembered his wonderful, energetic, Rhode Islander father, who has not only done so much for Little Rhody, but who has a statue in honor of him gracing a plot of land overlooking the ocean in Colt State Park. Now that is what I call a gentlemen and committed elected officer.

Please, wake up Rhode Island, this man does not run for Rhode Island, he runs for himself. Perhaps that by the time voting time comes, we can all talk with our elders and give them the truth about this candidate.

What a break, not another Lunch, Caprio Kennedy or relative of the present inept Governor...

He sproved he was his own man in the Senate, and we traded him in for a "me too" kind of guy.

I'm with him all the way.

Lincoln Chafee is a kind and honorable person. However, it is my opinion, that he should remain a private citizen. He clearly does not exhibit the necessary leadership capabilities or the "street smarts" required to lead our State in these troubled times.

I'm glad it said the 2010 Rhode Island Governor's race. With his residence in Virginia while he was Senator I would have assumed Virginia.

Also has he checked with Bill Murphy and Gordon Fox yet? They may want another Republican as Govenor. Its no fun running rough shod over someone who might agree with you.

He is a great man, and he is not afraid to go against the majority. I believe that the individuals who have made the negative comments are "all wet". Mr.Chaffee is his own person.
He has my full support.

Dave from Ashaway said:

He's a nice enough guy but not governor material, in this state anyway. He's too aloof to the real problems. Here, you either have to behind the unions 100% or like Laffey willing to stand toe to toe with them. The problems here are too obvious not to be able to take a stand, not be wishy washy.

I don't think it really matters who is Gov'na. Things will not change. The GA will still be controlled by Labor Unions. The Gov'na is powerless in this state. Taxpayers are treated as walking wallets, to be emptied by taxes and endless fees imposed by the GA - mostly to support union pay and benefits.

With all due respect, citizens should check before making fatuous comments. Senator Chafee's accomplishments are numerous and honorable.
We are a state of independent thinkers and the Senator truly exemplifies this noble quality.

How can anyone voe for this guy. Don't you remember how he was in Washington, it was a big joke, he only got there because of his father, and he is not his fathers son. Just stay at Brown they deserve you

Yes, Lincoln Chaffee is honest. Yes, Lincoln Chaffee is honorable. Yes, Lincoln Chaffee is a hard worker. Yes, Lincoln Chaffee is a nice person. Also, Lincoln Chaffee is the most naive adult I've ever met in my life. I'd love to have Linc for a next door neighbor but I wouldn't let him anywhere near those thieving hacks that run the General Assembly. They'd eat him for lunch! We need SOLUTIONS not nice guys!!!!!

Lincoln "The Missing Linc" Chafee is indeed an honorable man, his own man, and a proud Virginian. His only qualification for public service is he is the son of a great statesman. Correction, he's brighter than Patrick Kennedy. I think. If this is the best we can do we honestly should pack it in as a state. Is Bob Healey running?
