PROVIDENCE -- Tom Tancredo, former congressman from Colorado, Republican presidential candidate and outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, is scheduled to speak in Rhode Island Wednesday. But he will not be addressing students at Providence College as he had originally planned, after college officials rejected a request from a student group to invite him to campus. Instead, Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement will host Tancredo at 7 p.m. at the Capt. Elwood Euart VFW Post, 55 Overland Avenue, Pawtucket. Tancredo has said he plans to deliver a speech outside the Providence College gates earlier that day, said Terry Gorman, executive director of RIILE. Student group Youth for Western Civilization asked PC officials if they could also host Tancredo, but the request was denied, said PC spokeswoman Pat Vieira. "They are not an officially recognized group," Vieira said. "They asked very late in the semester when there was not enough time for the request to go through the usual channels." Just as important, Vieira said, were Bishop Thomas J. Tobin's views on immigration and how immigrants -- whether here legally or illegally -- should be treated, which contrast sharply with Tancredo's. "The Bishop of Providence ... is a member of the College's Board of Trustees," Vieira said in a written statement. "If a similar request to host a speaker on this topic is made in a future semester, the College will encourage and facilitate a format that allows for multiple points of view to be expressed." Gorman said he and other anti-illegal immigration advocates are angered by the college's refusal to allow Tancredo to speak. "This college allowed Senators Kennedy and Whitehouse to speak, and they are virulently pro-abortion," Gorman said. "That goes against Church teaching, but they were invited to campus."

Way to go PC! I like that they aren't completely against him, but want to present him with opposing views. Makes me proud of my alma mater...

Students for Western Civilization is an Aryan-supremacist hate group that operates nationally via the website VDARE.COM,Young Americans for Freedom, and other far-right groups.

"The Bishop of Providence ... is a member of the College's Board of Trustees," Vieira said in a written statement. "If a similar request to host a speaker on this topic (opposing ILLEGAL immigration) is made in a future semester, the College will encourage and facilitate a format that allows for multiple points of view to be expressed." That is--- as long as the speakers are promoting the views of the Bishop, advocating FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS.
This is supposed to be an institution of learning? What hypocrites!

Also crazy Rev. Fred Phelps, Glenn Beck, Ted Haggard, David Vitter and Larry Craig
And Joe the plumber
even though he is not a plumber
and his name is not Joe

While it is well within the rights of the Church to control who the guest speakers are at Providence College, it seems close-minded that an institution seeking to broaden their students horizons would take such a stance. PC has forwarded several platforms over the years and should be commended for that. However, using the "time limits" argument to ban this speaker seems political at best. Fortunately, this unauthorized PC group has found an alternate location for this speaking engagement. Those in the academic community wishing to hear the point of view of Mr. Tancredo will be able to do so, no matter what the Bishop thinks.

PC is a Catholic school. They will not let someone with opposing views speak. That's un American, anti free speech, and below what an instituion of "higher learning" should be. But Notre Dame is also a noted Catholic school. They have invited B Hussein Obama to speak at their commencement. He is for pro choice (pro baby killing). I think that is against one of the basic tenents of the Catholic Church!!?? Does that make any sense? Is there just a little hypocrisy here? Or is the Catholic Curch in the bag for anyone or anything related to pushing the Democratic Party. No wonder membership in that church is slipping. I think it's going to fade into obsolescence if it's not already there.

Let's see; Notre Dame (a Catholic University) will have Barack Obama, a staunch proponent of late-term abortion, speak at their commencement; but Tom Tancredo, who advocates enforcing long-standing immigration laws, is denied the right to speak at Providence College. Well, it stands to reason that as the USA's morals slide into the abyss that "bizarro-world" political correctness would become the order of the day at a once great university. I wonder if PC will miss it's credibility?

Those who support baby killers can speak at PC but not people who support the law of the land. Another reason to be ashamed of the catholic church....... right up there with hiding the pedophiles from the law, allowing them to continue to destroy the lives of children.

Thanks, "me" for the info on Students for Western Civilization group. It's always nice to know who's behind what.

The letters 'PC' must stand for politically correct--this institution obviously doesn't stand up for freedom of speech. Every prospective student should know that, based on such actions, you go to Providence to get an indoctrination, not a liberal education. It's pretty simple: if you allow a single person like Bishop Thomas J. Tobin to control speech on campus, you are failing your students and not to be taken seriously as an academic institution.

Just like the religious...they're the first to start spewing hate and random lies, the first to start name-calling, the first to say they're non-political - until politics lines their coffers or kisses their behinds, and the first to prove the the hypocrisy of religion as a whole.

A college that is afraid of the peaceful expression of ideas does not seem honorable or impressive to me.

Bishop Tobin, here is MY views, and that of Mr. Tancredo, as to how ILLEGAL ALIENS should be "treated:" HUMANELY, and with Constitutional DUE PROCESS, as they are arrested, detained, and processed for deportation. That is, repatriated to their homelands. You see anything drastically wrong with sending trespassers HOME? As for lawfully admitted immigrants - that is, aliens with LEGAL PRESENCE here - we treat them pretty much like anybody else. They have nearly ALL the rights of citizens - they can't vote or hold office! - with NO responsibility for JURY DUTY or military service. Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me! But, then, I don't hold your exhalted rank in the Church heirarchy. I do, however, have the SAME vote that you do and the same right to free speech, which I'm exercising here. Too bad you won't provide that same right to Mr. Tancredo.

Note that the reasoning PC gives for not allowing the speech to happen is because it was NOT a college sponsored event, and hadn't been officially endorsed or sponsored by a student group that has any official standing on campus. If the group had gone through due process, become a recognized body on campus, and made their request properly, it'd likely have been approved.
"They are not an officially recognized group," Vieira said. "They asked very late in the semester when there was not enough time for the request to go through the usual channels."
An unofficial group requests rights and privileges without obtaining proper registrations and sponsorship... i thought that was the major gripe of the anti-illegal immigration movement?
Why then would a group interested in preserving the rights, resources, and privileges of those who they belong to NOT have registered themselves and followed due process? Bit of a role reversal.

Great comment checkbeforeyouwreck.
I am a Providence College student who for once is proud of the administration's firm decision to do what is best for the school and its students. The true spirit of intellectual debate should not rely on the perpetuation of hate and ignorance. The foundation of America has been its status as a melting pot full of rich and diverse cultures. Failing to appreciate this will only divide a country that needs solidarity more than ever.
