PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- Providence College will give five honorary degrees at the Dominican institution's 91st commencement, held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 11 a.m. May 17. Four of the recipients have ties to PC, including commencement speaker Martin J. Doblmeier, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and 1973 graduate. Doblmeier founded Alexandria, VA-based Journey Films in 1984, a television and film documentary company that produces programs about religion, spirituality, history and social issues. His films include Bonhoeffer and The Power of Forgiveness, which won several awards, including the U.S. International Film Festival Award. Other honorary degree candidates are: Sister Deborah A. Blow, a 1979 PC alumna and co-founder and executive director of North County Mission of Hope, and a founding member of the Dominican Sisters of Hope in Plattsburg, NY. Sister Blow co-founded the mission in 1998 in response to Hurricane Mitch, which killed more than 22,000 people in Nicaragua. Maureen McKenna Goldberg, acting chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Goldberg was a member of the first class of women to enroll at PC. Michael Tranghese, former PC sports information director and longtime commissioner of the 16-school BIG EAST Conference, the nation's largest Division 1-A athletic conference. Robert P. George is the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideas and Institutions at Princeton University. George is a member of the President's council on Bioethics and the Council of Foreign Relations. |
