The U.S. Navy plans to recognize the crew of the USS Providence Saturday for cooking the best food in the U.S. submarine service during the last year.

Crew from the USS Providence and runner up, the USS Louisiana, will be recognized at the Military and International Food Service Executives Association's conference at the Hotel Hilton in Atlanta. A third submarine, the USS Rhode Island, was given honorable mention.

Capt. George Devries, deputy commander, Navy Family Support, Naval Supply Systems Command, said in a statement, "Sailors know that the Navy food-service program is an essential element of their quality of life. It affects the health of our Sailors, morale, and retention. The annual Ney food-service awards foster excellence in food service across the Navy Enterprise while improving the quality of life for our Navy personnel."

The award is named after Navy Capt. Edward F. Ney, who served as head of the Subsistence Division of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts during World War II.

The Dolphin, the newspaper at the sub base in Groton, reported this was the first time the Providence and most of its culinary specialists have won the award.
