PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island's Local Initiatives Support Corporation has committed $710,000 to two community-building programs in Providence. Olneyville Housing Corporation will receive $400,000 to buy foreclosed properties for reuse as affordable housing. And LISC has committed $310,000 to help The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence renovate an abandoned convent in South Providence as a base for the group's nonviolence and gang prevention programs. Since 1991, LISC has invested more than $250 million in Rhode Island to support efforts to build sustainable communities. Although the awards have been approved by Rhode Island LISC, the commitments await approval from the group's national office, according to spokesman Joe Vaughan.
