SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- A 15-year-old South Kingstown youth was in serious condition in Hasbro Childrens Hospital Monday after an off-road accident Sunday evening.

Detective Sgt. James R. Tierney of the South Kingstown police said the boy was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle when it struck a tree.

The boy was taken by Life Star Helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital after the accident around 5:24 p.m. on a private dirt road, according to Tierney.

The South Kingstown police needed to shut down Commodore Perry Highway temporarily for the helicopter to land.

More details are not yet available from the police.
