Story by Karen Lee Ziner PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- An estimated 300 Providence College students protested Wednesday afternoon outside the school gates against former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, a past Republican presidential candidate and outspoken opponent of illegal immigration. The students -- who wore multicolored paper-plate masks, which they said represented their diversity -- stood in silence as Tancredo started speaking against "the cult of multiculturalism." "I would have though I would have the opportunity to be inside the college, but that is not to be," Tancredo said, referring to the school's decision not to allow his talk on campus. Western civilization, Tancredo said, "is under attack at this institution." "Yes, diversity is a good thing, but it cannot be the only thing around which we hang a society." About 15 minutes into his speech, the students turned their backs on him. "I know what you've been told about me," Tancredo said. "You've been told that we are a racist group . . . This has nothing to do with race. This is an issue of western civilization." Meanwhile, several dozens Tancredo supporters yelled at the student protesters. "Why do you cover your faces?" yelled Salvator Robert of Providence. "Take off your masks. Hamas (the Palestinian group) covers their faces." Tancredo is scheduled to speak Wednesday night at a meeting of Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement (RIILE), in Pawtucket. A photo gallery on RIILE's Web site includes a picture of RIILE president Terry Gorman with Tancredo -- then a presidential candidate -- at a 2007 meeting of the Republican National Committee. At least 20 RILE members attended his appearance outside Providence College, said former Marine Corps Lt. Stephen Struk, who called Tancredo a "true patriot." Providence College rejected a request by Youth for Western Civilization to have Tancredo speak on campus, noting the group is not officially recognized and that they had made the request "very late in the semester when there was not enough time for the request to go through the usual channels," said Pat Vieira, a spokeswoman for the college. Providence College "did not ban or censor the appearance by Congressman Tancredo," said the Rev. Brian J. Shanley, the school's president. Shanley said the group, Youth for Western Civilization, "has not followed the process outlined in the student handbook to achieve official recognition" by the Student Congress, and were not allowed to host the event on campus. Moreover, Shanley said, "on controversial issues where the U.S. Conference of Catholic bishops and our own Bishop (Thomas J. Tobin) have taken a clear position, the College has a responsibility to ensure, to the best of our ability, that the Church's position is represented." In that case, the college would "encourage and facilitate" a forum so multiple sides of the issue could be heard. Youth for Western Civilization identifies itself on its Facebook page as "the West's right-wing youth movement" for students "who believe Western Civilization is moving in the wrong direction and want to do something about it." It says the group "is focused on the support of Western history, identity, high culture, and pride and opposition to radical multiculturalism, political correctness, racial preferences, mass immigration, and socialism." The Southern Poverty Law Center recently put the group on its watch list because of suspected ties to white nationalist groups. PC sophomore Timothy Dionisopoulos said he recently started the PC group because the College Republicans -- whom he identified as "right wing" -- are not taking on the issues." "We're interested in activism and spreading the message of Western civilization -- that it's okay to identify with your own culture and that it's important that you preserve that." Dionisopoulos added, "It's not white culture -- it's American culture ..." Dionisopoulos said its Facebook group has "about 30 members." Kevin DeAnna, who said he founded the Youth for Western Civilization last fall, said in a phone interview Wednesday that there is another YWC chapter at the University of Rhode Island, and six other chapters at campuses around the country, including the University of Connecticut. He said there "are at least double that" that are in the process of forming. Three weeks ago, protesters halted Tancredo's speech at the University of North Carolina that was also sponsored by Youth for Western Civilization. Police pepper-sprayed some of the protesters after demonstrators broke a window, according to the Associated Press. According to The Tennessean newspaper, protesters outnumbered YWC members 10 to 1, at a YCW-sponsored event in March at Vanderbilt University. If PC did not condone, recognize or sponsor this group, why are these protests at PC? PC has a diverse student population. The protestors should target an appropriate site rather than one that has supported it. I guess it might not show up on TV as well if they wait until the lecture tonight!

While YWC has not come forth to PC's Student Congress for recognition, there are students both for the ideas and opposing them. I think you may have misunderstood that the protesters were students not protesting against PC allowing him (because for other reasons he was not allowed and in fact spoke just off campus at the Rive Ave. gates) but rather protesting the ideas without concern for where Tancredo was speaking.

I guess Hispanics are not "western" enough for these clowns...YWC is nothing less than today's equivalent of David Duke's EURO movement of the 1990s.

Tancredo threatened to show up outside the campus as a protest of his exclusion.

This is what this once great country has come to now, and is getting to under Obama. Nutjob students oppose Tancredo, who has never uttered a racist word, or displayed an ounce of racism. He merely wants our laws enforced, and these idiots call him a racist. Fasten your seatbelts folks, as this country is spiralling towards social decline thanks to the loony left.

Well, then there are several hundred stupid protestors in the state. Let them pay for their education and their neighbors education and then let's see if thoust protesteth too much.

They are having their own "TEA-PARTY"

What am I missing here? A guy who wishes to talk about western civilization, and is against something that's illegal, meets stiff opposition at a school where Western Civilization remains a core requirement. Sorry, Dan. If you mean racially diverse you are wrong. PC retains admissions requirements that are quite stringent. Other than the basketball team, academically unqualified students don't get accepted.

So SAD. To see so many little lemmings going out and supporting politically correct causes. If only they had paused to think. while their parents struggle in crappy jobs to pay their tuition, their parents also get to pay educcation, medical and social services costs of illegal aliens.
They disgrace themselves by trying to silence the free speech of others.
The administration of PC is cowardly. If you stifle public speech because you "want to tell your side" that is still stifling the free speech of others.
No on should give a dime to PC or the church until they stop aiding and abetting illegal aliens..which by the way is a federal crime.

Why is it ok for a group like La Raza (meaning The Race, as in the superior race) which promotes Hispanic culture to exist, while it is not okay for Americans to be proud of, promote and defend our language and culture?
Hey, we have the greatest culture in the world, and those old white guys who set up this country and created our institutions were AWESOME! I am very proud of my heritage.
What is wrong with Tancredo being against illegal behavior?
The Pew Hispanic Center estimates allmost all illegal aliens are Hispanic.
Why should Hispanics who are breaking the law be given preferential immigration treatment over people who are attempting to come to our country legally of all other races and ethnic groups?
Why should Hispanic American families be given a greater right to family reunification in terms of number of family members allowed in, timing of arrival, and conditions of entry, over American families of all other races and ethnic groups?
Illegal aliens commit crimes. Illegal entry is a crime. ID theft, document fraud, tax evasion are all felonies - Americans and legal immigrants spend a long time in jail for those crimes.
Preferential immigration treatment for Hispanics is RACISM.
No one in America should be above the law.
You can have plenty of diversity with LEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Actually, Dan, PC was named one of the most homogenous schools in the nation. PC is not full of diversity and this is a problem. Diversity helps people be more worldy, contrary to Tom Tancredo's beliefs.

Sometimes it seems like the modern university is in favor of diversity in everything except opinion.

Tom Tancredo is one who sees the damage of these ILLEGAL ALIENS on the American taxpayers and this Country by their ILLEGAL presence in the United States. My question here is who is doing the protesting, ILLEGAL ALIENS or uneducated students?
Either way, NO ILLEGAL ALIEN HAS A RIGHT TO BE IN THIS COUNTRY FOR ANY REASON!
It's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It's long overdue for them to get back to their own country where they belong.

sorry but these protesters had every right to do what they did. youth for western civilization is a reactionary front for white supremacists. it is a faux movement.

I lean toward Tancredo's views and I am a PC alum. However, I do support these students' right to free expression. It's truly a multi-faceted issue and I understand the church's need to show mercy to people living in unfortunate circumstances. I have to say that I grew up in a large Portuguese immigrant community. When I think of how hard my friends' parents worked to not only make a living and study to become citizens... They helped their relatives emigrate legally, incurring great expense, filling out a lot of paperwork, taking a lot of time... It really upsets me to think that some don't believe that the same rules apply to them. I admire legal immigrants for their tenacity and their patriotism. I feel badly for those who are stuck in impossible situations, but come here legally.

PC is a religious school, where they practice freedome of religion and freedom of speech. Why would they want to squelch someone else's freedom of speech just because they disagree with him? What happened to Christian beliefs and American beliefs based on Christianity?
Being a descendant of Roger Williams = the founder of R.I., I find this behavior judgemental, discriminitory and outrageous. Shame on all of you. Open your eyes instead of covering your faces. If you are proud of what you are doing, why are covering your faces. If you don't want to hear someone speak, just leave. What you did was discriminatory and cowardly.

I'm outraged at some of the reactions to this protest, a protest that I helped organize and was a part of.
Firstly, some of you need to get a clue. The administration did not try to silence Tancredo. The MAIN reason why he wasn't allowed to speak was because the group that tried to sponsor him, Youth for Western Civilization (YWC), did not go through the proper routes in order to receive Tancredo. Not only that, but YWC are not yet an offical club on campus, a process that takes time for ANY club who wants to get recognized, so they didn't even have the right to sponsor him.
Providence College upholds Catholic tradition and its decisions should be respected. If they wanted to deny entry because of the outspoken views of an individual (which they didn't do), it would be because it is not in line with the Church's stance. Tom Tancredo supports a linear view of America and openly told protesters this week, many of different cultural backgrounds, that the western civilization path is the best path. What some of you fail to understand is that this system works both ways. PC's chapter of Amnesty had to make amendments to its group charter in order to be in line with the College's, as well as the Church's stance. Tancredo refers to multiculturalism as a cult, calls Arabs and Hispanics problem-ethnicities and supports a society where one culture exists. If an individual were to speak in support of Nazism, tell us how the Administration should react?
It was a silent protest. None of the protesters reacted in an unruly way. Our turning our backs to Tancredo while he was talking was a reaction to a sign that one of the organizers held up saying "If you disagree with these views, turn your back". The masks were not an ode to Hamas, as one of the unruly Tancredo supporters suggested (noted to be a local, and not a student), but were of different colors and symbolized diversity alone (supported by a poster that read "The Face of America".
What wasn't reported was the verbal abuse that some of the protesters were receiving from some of the non-student Tancredo supporters that were there. A particular gentleman called one of our female protesters a "Vagina". Another, he exclaimed "are you on Facebook, sweetie, I bet you're on facebook" and telling us to "get educated". Don't tell us we were asking for it, either, it was a SILENT PROTEST. Words cannot express the inappropriateness of the behavior of some of the Tancredo supporters. You come to our college, apparently to support a cause you believe in, and then you bring shame to your own cause and embarass the students who were in support of Tancredo by being verbally abusive, childish and petty.
As a response to an individual that said that most of the protestors had no idea why we were there, there was a single blanket-email that went around to all individuals through various organizations that explained CLEARLY what the intentions of the protest and the reasons for doing so. There were also flyers being passed out that had information on the protest.
@Hermoine: Do not tell us that we were "trying to silence the free speech of others", you uninformed knob-canoe, how in the world does silent protest silence others? We protested his views, not his presence.
@dan: The protesters were students and faculty.
@Jason: We respected his opinion, clearly. Our Administration has rules to; see what I wrote above on why Tancredo wasn't allowed to talk on school grounds.

Their improvised masks were perfect symbols of the anti-human diversity ideology -- uniform covers made from mass-produced, disposable paper plates to hide the identity and heritage of each foot soldier demonstrating for the Wall Street Journal's Open Borders crusade against the historical nation-state.
These students have swallowed whole the notion that their generation has uncovered the ultimate value of "diversity," which somehow trumps community, heritage, tradition -- and the free exchange of ideas. They may believe they're showing off their righteousness, but are only displaying their indoctrination. Truly sad.

Mike, how lovely that you're telling us what our own intentions were, I never would have known otherwise.
Let's talk about community, heritage, and tradition, then. A native American girl, in her traditional outfit, was at the protest. You have no idea how sick it made me, and her, listening to two Tancredo supporters telling her why the Western world, following the logic of "heritage and tradition" that the YWC openly supports, did not "assimilate" into Native American culture.
We're all immigrants.

How can anyone say that Tancredo is not a racist when he states he is not a racist with the same sentence as he supports a white homogeneous country. That is the very definition of racism.
