Today in history: Jellyfish visit Barrington Town Beach

A year ago today:

The Department of Environmental Management warns people to stay away from lion's mane jellyfish after receiving a report -- with photographs -- that some of the creatures had washed ashore and were "all over" Barrington Town Beach.

5 years ago today:
Three children survive an accident that kills their parents, who were not wearing seat belts and were ejected when their sport-utility vehicle rolled over on Route 495 in Foxboro.

25 years ago today:
Nellie, a three-ton elephant, snaps her chain and takes a 200-yard gallop in Slater Park, Pawtucket. Nellie, on loan to the park from Southwick Animal Farm, Mendon, Mass., was saddled and tethered by a chain to a stout pole, with about 20 people waiting in line for a ride, when she started to act skittish.


On the international front:


On this day in 1492, Christopher Columbus received a commission from Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to seek a westward ocean passage to Asia.
