Sundlun cited for expired license, traffic violations

JAMESTOWN, R.I. -- Former Gov. Bruce Sundlun was cited for driving with an expired license and had his Buick towed home after a traffic stop last month about 3½ miles from his house.

Jamestown Police Officer Mark Esposito reported that he saw Sundlun, 89, drive through a stop sign at Narragansett and Conanicus avenues, and then cross over the roadway's double yellow lines on the afternoon of March 23. When the officer turned on his emergency lights, Sundlun kept driving and continued on for another half-mile, even after the officer used his siren to try to pull him over, according to Esposito's report.

The officer later chalked up Sundlun's failure to stop right away to the former governor's trouble hearing.

Sundlun was cited for the expired license, failure to obey a stop sign, and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway. He refused to sign the citations, but did sign the District Court summons to appear on the expired license citation. Chief Thomas Tighe said on Friday that Sundlun has since renewed his license.

Sundlun was cited by the Jamestown police six months ago, after a school bus driver reported seeing him "floor the accelerator" and drive around the bus when it was stopped with its red lights flashing at Conanicus and Mount Hope avenues. His citation for "special stops required" was dismissed by the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal, Tighe said.

A woman answering the door at Sundlun's home late Friday morning said he had "taken the bus to Providence." Calls to cell phone went unanswered and the phone did not accept messages.

This guy is dangerous. Why would they dismiss the charge he drove around a bus. It certainly fits his character and sense of entitlement. Revoke his driving license!

Arrogance, plain and simple. Passing a school bus with red lights on, must have been in a hurry, and of course traffic court dismisses the charges.

Not stopping for siren and lights. Too deaf to see the lights? Doesn't he occasionally look in his mirrors when driving?

So just because he is the former governor he gets special treatment. What if there was a kid crossing the road in front of the bus or there was another car who had the right away proceeding through the stop sign and he hit them and caused injury or even death. How many tiimes is he going to be dismissed of charges or let go before his license is pulled or something more serious happens. And if it was my car it would have been towed to an impound lot and I would have had to pay a huge fee to get it back. Keep up the good work and favors.

The citation was DISMISSED? Running a STOP sign or making an illegal turn with no injuries ....BUT to pass a SCHOOL BUS with flashing RED lights and "floor the accelerator" then the citation was DISMISSED by his 'buddies?' at the RI Traffice Tribunal. Disgusting .... again another Polictical wrong-doing from this State. I am ashamed of this behavior. Thanks to GOD that no child was hurt or killed by this pompous a$$! And he was once our Governor? Tsk Tsk ! Just like the rest of his ilk. Whatever happened to men of honesty and integrity?

Are they nuts? Don't they know Bruce is the law?

Why do they pick on this old egomaniac who now thinks he's the Lord incarnate..

he should have his licensce pulled, he's a danger to the public.

Disgusting.

When will his family realize that he has dementia and he shouldn't be driving? When he's involved in a serious accident? At minimum he should be tested for competency to drive. Suppose the siren was a firetruck about to cross in front of him?

Bruce Sundlun is not our former governor, he is our KING!

This man should not be driving. He can afford a cab.

Gee, a Rhode Island politico displaying arrogance, social ignorance, and a total lack of regard for the law. Nothing new here!

THIS STORY WILL CONTINUE TILL HE KILLS SOMEONE, HE SHOULD HAVE HIS DRIVER LICENSE AND ABILITY TO DRIVE BE CHECKED, BUT BECAUSE HE IS FROM THE POLITICAL BUNCH THEY WILL DO NOTHING TILL HE KILLS SOMEONE

Why did they renew his license? This guy needs a hearing test and eye exam. And don't forget a taste of humility.

I've had this guy pass me and many other drivers, in the beakdown lane and drive all the way to the light and then cut his car in front of me (into the intersection-by the way).He stayed out there until the light changed at which point he floored it and sped off down mineral spring. "Mr Entitlement" couldn't have cared less!

Although we do not condone what Gov. Sundlun did,if he were in this state illegally the ACLU would be at his side claiming he is simply an "undocmented driver" and is being singled out
unfairly. They would be all over this case and all the liberals would be rallying in protest of police unfairness by now...GIVE THE GUY A BREAK, his service to this state[we feel] should.. AT LEAST...have kept this incident out of the news and save him and his family this humiliation!!!

Govenor,
We do appreciate your service to our country and to our state. You"ve led a quite interesting life indeed! Frank Sinatra also had an interesting life.
He didn"t know when to get off the stage either. Only he didn"t wait until he killed someone. It can"t be easy to admit it is time to think of other innocent people who may be injured because your pride blinds your common sense. If your senses are failing, should not your paramount concern be the safety of your fellow citizens? We thank you for all that you have accomplished in your full life. God bless!

Govenor,You may not be able to see the writing on the wall or hear the sirns of emergency vehicles but maybe if you get really close you may be able to read my lips," You are a danger to pedestrians and other drivers". The time has come to give it up! We will all be thankful. Your service has been appreciated. Thank you.
