PROVIDENCE -- Both sides in a federal lawsuit over the death of a immigrant detainee who died while in custody at the Wyatt Detention Facility have agreed that the federal government can have more time to produce documents in the case, a lawyer for the dead man's family said today.

Earlier this month the government had been given an April 14 deadline to produce medical records, internal interviews and other documents concerning the death of Hiu Lui "Jason" Ng last August. But John J. McConnell Jr., the Ng family's lawyer said both sides and the court had agreed that for now the records could be produced through the normal discovery process in the suit.

He said the release of Roger Gracias Lozano, a key witness in the case, from federal custody earlier this month had made the need for the documents less immediate.

Gracias Lozano cared for Ng in the final weeks of his life while he was at Wyatt, suffering from liver cancer and a fractured spine. The severity of Ng's medical condition went undiagnosed until just days before he died at Rhode Island Hospital last summer.
