NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island Family Court workers voted Friday by secret ballot to join Rhode Island Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, Rhode Island's largest public employee union. The final vote was 41 for Council 94, 13 for Local 808 of the Laborers union, and 8 for no union. Five additional votes are being contested as court officials have challenged whether those employees can join the union based on their positions as deputy clerk supervisors, said John Burns, an organizer for Council 94. The State Labor Relations Board, which supervised the election, is to certify the results within five days. "We welcome the Family Court employees as our newest members," Burns said in a news release. "Council 94 looks forward to providing assistance in negotiations, contract administration, and legal representation so that Family Court employees have a strong voice in their workplace." J. Michael Downey, president of Council 94, added, "I know how hard these employees work for the Family Court, and Council 94 will work hard for them at and away from the bargaining table." Council 94 represents more than 4,000 state employees and more than 3,300 municipal employees.
