NEW BEDORD, Mass. -- An East Providence man pleaded guilty Thursday to running a drug delivery operation in New Bedford, the New Bedford Standard-Times reported. Ángel R. Olmeda, 29, was arrested Feb. 17 after narcotics detectives stopped him in the near North End. The police found a hidden electrical compartment in the car's gauge cluster with 50 grams of heroin, 14 grams of crack cocaine and three loaded firearms, according to court records. Olmeda has been held without bail since a Feb. 23 dangerousness hearing in New Bedford District Court. He pleaded guilty to carrying an illegal firearm, which carries a mandatory minimum 18-month jail sentence. Olmeda was sentenced to 2½ years in jail on the distribution charge, with two years suspended unless he violates probation, and an additional six months in jail for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. Gregg Miliote, spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, told the Standard-Times Olmeda's sentencing was in line with the district attorney's policy of recommending consecutive sentences for defendants charged with gun and drug crimes. "The toxic combination of drugs and guns is an ingredient for severe violence," Miliote said. |
