Michael Wiggins, a 48-year-old orthopedic surgeon and the founder of Foundry Sports Medicine in Providence, died unexpectedly Wednesday at the Breckenridge Ski Resort, in Colorado, where he was attending a national snowboarding competition in which two of his five children competed.

Dr. Wiggins lost consciousness while he was riding a chair lift with his family. Efforts to revive him at the peak were unsuccessful, the Summit County coroner, Joanne Richardson, told the Associated Press.

Wiggins was an avid cyclist and runner and a triathlete, His wife is Doreen Wiggins, M.D., an OB-GYN at Women & Infants Hospital who shared his passions for family, fitness and the community. The family lives in East Greenwich.

The family is "devastated" by Wiggins' death, said his brother-in-law, State Police Det. Lt. John Leyden III. He said the family declined further comment.

Family members have gathered around Doreen Wiggins and her children in Colorado, said Norma Morrison, vice president of operations for Foundry Sports Medicine. She said an autopsy was to be performed Thursday, and the family expects to return to Rhode Island Sunday.

"He was always incredibly accessible to his patients," said Dean P. Mcelwain, a physical therapist who met Wiggins when they were both in training at Rhode Island Hospital in the early 1990s.

At Foundry Sports Medicine and Fitness off Promenade Street today, the phone was ringing off the hook with calls from patients, Morrison said, and the staff was struggling to get through the day.

She said Dr. Wiggins put "a lot of time and effort into his patients," taking a holistic approach to their care, and providing free services to many people.

"He firmly believed in always giving back to the community," Morrison said.

For the last three years, Michael and Doreen Wiggins co-chaired Friends Way, a bereavement center for children and families.

Dr. Wiggin's touched the lives of so many people, enabling us to live fuller, richer lives because of his skills as a brilliant surgeon. He was a doctor that believed it was important to treat the whole person not just their 'injury'. As long time patients my daughter Amanda and I are both devasted by his loss for we have not only lost a wonderful doctor but a wonderful friend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children, those colleagues in his practice and his patients as well.

My Wife and I found Dr. Wiggins by accident, what happened next was nothing short of amazing.
He worked on my left shoulder x2, my wife's shoulders x3 and worked on my mom's shoulder x1.
As with all Dr.'s there was professionalism, but with Mike there was some fun as well.
He would call from the OR just to tell my wife what was going on, and to tell her what he found.
He would give his best to all of us, and in part there are lots of people walking, moving
and thanking God each and EVERY DAY that there was a Dr. Michael Wiggins, who helped them
too.
God Speed, and tell them your first martini
is on

My sincere condolences go out to Doreen and her children. Dr Wiggins helped me tremendously 10 years ago, he performed my hip surgery when I was 34 and left me with minimal scarring he was an absolutely wonderful physician. I'll never forget when he came in to visit me after the surgery and brought his daughter in for a visit at the time she was 2 he adored his family tremendously. Dr Wiggins even had me become a patient of Doreen's. He will be truly missed by me and everyone that knew him.

Rest in Peace Dr. Wiggins you will never be forgotten. Thanks for helping me walk again, without you I would not be where I am today.

God Bless and we will meet again someday.

I was shocked and saddened to hear this news - which came to me through one of the many people I have encountered who had been patients or knew someone who had been a patient and, like me, raved about what a terrific person and surgeon Dr. Wiggins was. I had only recently become a patient but found that his easy, friendly manner, professionalism and great sense of humor put me at ease immediately. His skills as a surgeon became evident shortly thereafter. He will be missed by all who encountered him and my deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Dr. Wiggins...I cannot believe this. You were somewhere you loved...the mountains with your family.

You were one of my favorite surgeons to work with in the Operating Room...Mikey. I remember when you broke your foot, working still, then you broke your wrist, snowboarding...and you came to my son's wake...Anthony...who you took care of when he played hockey.

I know the good you did for everyone and how much you loved your family. Your wife and your kids will need so much support so I hope you will be okay. Each day doesn't get better, just more bearable but know you and my son are always with us.

I am devasted to learn this news about Dr. Wiggins. Not only was he my surgeon but I also considered him to be a friend. He performed surgery on me twice for my shoulders and he was outstanding. Throughout my consultations, the actual surgeries and the physical therapy that followed, he was always there to lend support and a joke. He was such a caring person who treated his patients as family. He made you feel so comfortable when you were around him and he helped to eliminate any concerns or apprehensions you may have had about your upcoming procedures. We shared a lot of stories about the Red Sox and just his overall passion for sports. We also talked about our children together and shared stories of the activities they were involved in. I always considered myself to be very fortunate to have him as my surgeon and as a friend. I will miss him dearly and so will so many others. Prayers and wishes to his entire family.

Dr. Wiggins and family,
I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my husband two years ago and have two young children. Since then we have been with Friends Way which has helped my children immensely. My first thought today was to make sure you heard about Friends Way, until I learned that you are the chairs of Friends Way that we hear so much about.
So I will be thinking of you and your family and you have our prayers. I also want to thank you for the generous and loving work you have done for other families. I am grateful and so very very sorry!

Dr. Wiggins was the best doctor I have ever had. I met Doctor Wiggins in 1998 when I broke my shoulder. Because of his brilliant surgical ability I regained total range of motion, which other doctors thought would never happen. He was not only a excellent surgeon but was also the most caring compassionate doctor that I have ever met. We was a friend. Through him Doreen also became my doctor. I can see why the both married. They were soul mates. Their love for their profession was incredible and their love for their children radiated when they spoke about them. The staff at both of their practices seemed to always be happy, which also speaks of how they treated their employees. Michael Thank you for all you have done for all of us. Doreen, I know that we will see Michael again someday. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. We will miss you Michael!

My heartfelt sympathy to the Wiggins family, friends and the staff at Foundry Sports Medicine. I only saw Dr. Wiggins a couple of times for my shoulder, but knew the instant I met him that he was the right orthopedic doc for me. Thanks to him I was able to avoid surgery on my shoulder by utilizing his excellent PT staff. I was so impressed with him that I sent friends and co-workers to him, who were equally pleased to have found him - we were all so shocked to hear of his passing. The world has lost a wonderful, caring, compassionate person who will be missed by many, many people. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

As one of the countless people who were healed my Mike Wiggins (repeatedly over the past decade) I am deeply saddened to learn that he has passed. He was a talented, compassionate and accessible physician with a terrific bed-side manner. I hope that his family can find some comfort in knowing how much good he did in his 48 years.

dr.Michael wiggins has been my Doctor for at least ten yrs. He was the most down to earth Doc I have ever met, plus the best surgeon. he operated on my knee a couple of times. To my surprise he even called me at home to see how I felt. I will personally miss having him for my ortho doc.
His wife Doreen is My sister's Dr., she spoke of her as being the most friendly, funny and sincere person ever. She assisted in my sister's breast surgery. She either came to see my sister or called her. It's no wonder that mike and her were husband and wife. What a match! Doreen my sister and I have the greatest sympathy for you and your children, God will give you the strengh and courage to carry on.

I am so very saddened to hear about this great loss. I have read the above testimonies. I agree with all them. The Wiggins' are genuine, amazing, professional, family people. All others are drawn to people like them. They are unique in their specialties. They seem to have truly complemented one another. Dr.(Doreen)Wiggins- You were on my mind endlessly that terrible day. You have been in my prayers every night since. I hope one of my prayers can help you endure the loss of your cherished husband. God Bless you & your children.

Our son became friends with 2 of the Wiggins children through snowboarding (fantastic kids!). We were shocked to hear of Michael's passing and saddened for Doreen and her children's loss. We only had a few occassions to speak with Michael in New Hampshire but know that his loss will be deeply felt. Our prayers are with the family, our hearts are heavy ....

Dr. Wiggins was an amazing man. He treated me since I was in the 3rd grade (8 years old!!!) with a broken foot and now I'm 22. When I was younger, I was fracturing bones left and right - I was constantly in his office getting treatment. He use to great me with that big smile and my favorite line, "You again! What did you do now?!" I'll miss hearing that the most.

To his children - your dad really loved each and every one of you more than you can ever imagine. He use to talk about you guys ALL the time, especially his son in college. Dr. Wiggins use to joke about when he asked his son what he wanted to major in, he gave him the ol' shrug or something along those lines. My mom and I use to tell him to leave you alone and just pay the bill! He knew (still knows) how much potential you had (still have) and he really believed (still believes) in you.

My deepest sympathies to Dr. Wiggins' wife and children. He was a great man and even though he's watching down on us from above, he will still be sorely missed by all.

There are so few people in this world who impact the lives of so many people, and Dr. Wiggins was definately one of them. To Doreen, Stephen, Brenden, Kai, Olivia, and Jade: my heart breaks for you, because unfortunately I know what it is like to have a loved one taken so suddenly and unexpectedly in the mountains of Colorado. We are old friends from Mike's high school in Florida. We are so shocked and saddened to hear about Mike. We didn't have much contact in his post high school years but it's obvious from all these wonderful tributes that he was liked now as much as he was then, it is so nice to read all the wonderful notes about him. We all used to have so much fun, going to the causeway, the beach, etc. Mike lived behind me all through high school, his family was so nice, everyone knew the Wiggins house. We have heard from many friends today and everyone is so saddened. We want his wife and children to know that we are keeping you in our prayers. We are having our 30th reunion this year, Mike will be missed.

I'm another old friend of Mike's from high school in Dunedin, FL. I just head the news yesterday. Our class had recently begun planning our 30yr reunion, and Mike was one of the people I was really looking forward to seeing again. He was a top student, played trombone in band, and was on the football team. I remember sitting next to him performing in a 6th grade combined school band concert. We were on different instruments, but were playing the same line. He wasn't timid about it...he dove right in and carried me along. It was a truly inspiring moment for me. How he ever managed to reach the 7th position on the trombone remains a mystery, but he excelled at everything he did, and effortlessly, so it seemed. He was so easy going, so likeable. A class act! Whenever I was around him I felt a rising confidence in myself that rubbed off from him. He shared this energy freely with everyone. It's no surprise to hear he achieved all the great things he did in his short time here on earth, and is thought of so fondly by so many. My truly heartfelt sympathy goes out to all his family and friends. Shanti
