EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Residents and visitors can again experience the merry-go-round that occurs at the historic Crescent Park Looff Carousel. Providence Journal file photo / Bob BreidenbachThe Bullocks Point Avenue attraction opens Easter Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. and its hours of operation for the spring season are Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. through June. When the summer comes round, Thursday and Friday hours will be added. Carousel Commission chairman Stephen Furtado said there aren't any major changes and admission is still $1. Yet items have been added to the museum and four more horses were renovated. He said the entire outer row of horses has been refurbished and the middle rows are next on the list for maintenance. Built in 1895 by Charles Looff as a showpiece for prospective buyers, the carousel has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. The General Assembly proclaimed it the State Jewel of American Folk Art in 1985. It has 61 horses, 1 camel and 4 chariots and is considered the most elaborate of Looff's works.
