MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- A teller manager at a local Sovereign Bank branch is accused of stealing more than $31,000 from customers' accounts and the bank's cash vault.

Jean A. Williams, 53, was fired from the Valley Road branch in February after an audit revealed that $10,500 was missing from the cash vault, according to the Rhode Island State Police.

Williams was in charge of auditing the vault on a daily basis, and although she'd prepared sheets that showed no shortage in the vault, she told the branch manager that she'd taken the money because she was being threatened by a lawsuit, according to a state police affidavit. An additional $500 was missing from her teller drawer, and a deposit made to the Seaview Inn LLC account was short $100, the affidavit said.

That led to further revelations that Williams had forged withdrawal tickets to take out $10,000 from one customer's CD account, and $10,000 from another customer's savings account back in December, the affidavit said.

Williams, of 15 Murphy Circle, was arraigned on Thursday in 2nd Division District Court for embezzlement by a bank employee, two counts of forgery, two counts of obtaining money under false pretenses, and computer access for fradulent purposes. She was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.
