A.H. Belo Corp., of Dallas, announced pay cuts for full-time employees at its media operations, which include The Providence Journal and The Dallas Morning News. The plans were announced Thursday in a letter to employees by Robert W. Decherd, A.H. Belo's chairman, president and chief executive officer. Non-union employees making more than $25,000 will see pay reduced from 2.5 percent to 15 percent, depending on their base salary. Decherd said the company's board of directors has approved a 20-percent cut to his salary and a 15-percent cut to the pay of other management committee members. Decherd also asked employees covered by collective-bargaining agreements to voluntarily lower their salaries by similar levels. To cushion the impact of the wage cuts, Decherd said, all affected employees will receive three additional personal days per year, effective at the time of the salary cuts. Taking effect on or near May 1, the pay cuts are expected to save A.H. Belo $10 million annually. The company will seek pay concessions from its unionized employees, Decherd said. "We will ask employees who are covered by collective bargaining agreements to voluntarily lower their salaries." The announcement comes two months after A.H. Belo said it would cut about 500 jobs - more than 14 percent of its overall work force, including 74 workers at The Providence Journal. In addition to The Providence Journal, The Dallas Morning News, and Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise, A.H. Belo Corp. (AHC:NYSE) owns the Denton (Texas) Record-Chronicle and the newspapers' Web sites, including projo.com. |
