About 600 people attended the annual spring career and job fair at the University of Rhode Island's Ryan Center Wednesday. The fair was open not only to URI students, but any college student or graduate. Bobbi Koppel, director of career services for the University of Rhode, said the event attracted about 90 organizations, down from 130 last year. She said the decline is probaby due to the recession. The job fair also had fewer job seekers than usual, about 600, when the job fair usually attracts between 800 and 950. Koppel said one would expect more in a down economy, and she's not sure why attendance was off. "You would think people would be beating down the doors," she said. Koppel said employers at the fair were hiring. "They're not going to spend the day doing this if they weren't going to be hiring," she said. |
