WEST WARWICK, R.I. -- Just hours after a deadly apartment fire in Cranston Monday, all of this town's on-duty firefighters raced to a house fire, into the burning building and pulled an unconscious man out of a third-floor bedroom. The man was not breathing when the crew found him, and they immediately began CPR, intubated him and raced him to the hospital, West Warwick Fire Capt. Paul Boisclair said this morning. The man's condition could not be determined as of this time. But Monday night, by the time crews got him to Kent Hospital, "he was coming around," Boisclair said. "The guys did a great job," he said. Heavy fire in the back of the 2 ½ -story building at 21 West St. was reported at 6:20 p.m., a little more than three hours after the fatal fire in Cranston. Someone calling dispatchers reported a person trapped on the third floor, Boisclair said. "The guys made a rapid advancement up to the third floor," he said. "They went right up. Fire all around them. ... Heavy smoke. Heavy heat. It's like going up into a chimney. Heavy fire showing as soon as they got to the top." The firefighters found the unconscious man in a back bedroom on the third floor, Boisclair said. Boisclair said "quite a few people" lived in the house. Families with children had gotten out safely by the time firefighters arrived at the scene. All 13 of the town's on-duty firefighters responded to the fire, as did the Warwick department. Cranston crews went to the West Warwick stations to cover for the town department, and they handled other alarms while the town crews fought the fire on West. Street The West Street fire was brought under control in about a half hour, Boisclair said. The initial entry on this report was posted at 8:39 a.m. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil.
