A United Way effort to battle homelessness in Rhode Island got a boost this week from CVS Caremark Corp., which donated $50,000 to the nonprofit agency. The United Way of Rhode Island started the Fund to Prevent Homelessness in Rhode Island in mid-January, a three-month effort to raise awareness about the plight of the state's homeless population and money to address their needs. The donation from CVS Caremark boosted the fund to more than $100,000, which triggered a matching grant from the United Way's Providence affiliate. The United Way then distributed more than $200,000 to 23 agencies around the state that help the homeless. The United Way now has started the second phase of its fundraising effort, during which it hopes to raise another $100,000 which the agency again will match. "We are asking all Rhode Islanders to step up and make donations to our important fund," said Anthony Maione, chief executive officer and president of United Way of Rhode Island. "Contributions made to the fund will be distributed directly to people who need assistance to meet rent, mortgages and utilities." |
