You can't get away from news about the economy. In Monday's Providence Journal, the front page features a report on Governor Carcieri's plan to cut 18,469 Rhode Islanders from the state's Pharmaceutical Assistant to the Eldery program. Advocates for the elderly weigh in. A House of Representatives panel comes in for its share of criticism by local unions for recommending an overhaul of pension benefits for 23,700 state employees and public school teachers. Both proposals are part of continuing efforts to find way of dealing with state spending. On the bright side, a promising treatment has been found for children with peanut allergies.
