PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Community officials from across Rhode Island gathered at the State House this morning to accept $7.55 million in federal and state environmental grants for 35 projects ranging from preservation of 215 acres of Crandall Swamp in Westerly to setting up pet waste stations along the Narrow River.

Most of the money came from the state's $70 million open space bond issue. Another $2.59 million was targeted towards reducing water pollution near the state's beaches.

"This is a good news day and we could all use some good new right now," said Governor Carcieri. He said the state preserved more than 3,000 acres in 2008 and it will probably preserve more this year.

Carcieri also touted completion recently of the massive combined sewer overflow project in Providence as well as a statewide coordinating team plan for protecting Rhode Island's waters. All, Carcieri said, "are examples of good things happening even though times are tough."

We actually do some things right in Rhode Island -- in fact quite a few things -- despite too many people's cynical views to the contrary.
