WASHINGTON -- Rhode Island is to get almost $9.5 million in federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act directed at fighting crime, a spokesman for the White House announced. "By keeping police officers on the streets whose jobs were threatened by budget cuts and ensuring states and municipalities have the tools and equipment necessary to fight crime," President Obama said in a news relase this morning, "this money will simultaneously help jumstart the American economy and protect our citizens." In all 28 cities and towns will receive $3.7 million in Byrne Justice Assistance Grant funds, including $1.6 million for Providence, $390,865 for Pawtucket, and $254,779 for Woonsocket. State law-enforcement officials will receive $5.7 million under the JAG grant program. JAG grants are allocated based on a formula that includes population and violent crime statistics. Rhode Island is also to receive $965,065 in federal funding to prevent violence against women, $755,000 for crime victims compensation and assistance, and $403,670 for targeting Internet crimes against children, according to a news release issued by the state's Congressional delegation.
