PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man walking with two others was fatally shot this afternoon near the Broad Street entrance to Roger Williams Park, the police say.

The gunman came out from behind a large trash container behind a coin-operated laundry where Porter and Baker Streets come together. Across Broad Street is the Hawthorne Avenue entrance to the park.

Lt. Mary Day, the police district commander for the Washington Park Area, said the police are pursuing the gunman, who is identified only as wearing a bandana. The police do not believe that the shooting is related to gang violence in the city.

Authorities wait for the state Medical Examiners Office to remove the body, covered with sheet.

At least two shots were fired, Day said.

Two dozen people gathered at the intersection after the shooting. According to several, the victim had been chased down Broad Street and was ambushed by someone waiting near the laundry building.

The victim died in the street and a fire truck was called in to wash his blood from the pavement. Bystanders pointed to traces of blood still visible in the gutter.

Nice. Now our kids will have to wear bullet proof vests while enjoying a day at the park.

K, your comment was very inappropriate. This was unfortunately an isolated incident and it could happen anywhere!!. To the family of this young man, please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers. May God Bless your family at this time.

Why would the journal feel the need to post a picture of the body? Totally unneccesary, and a gross attempt at sensationalism.

"This was unfortunately an isolated incident and it could happen anywhere!!. "

Yeah, except it usually manages to happen in the South End. Funny, that.

Yah...it could happen anywhere---IN PROVIDENCE!
Have you been reading the paper lately...How can anyone speculate that it's "isolated", if the only thing they know is that the shooter wore a bandana?

The police are just trying to keep people calm by saying that it's isolated. I think I'll take the "Bullet Proof Vest" advice, and you can stand outside Roger Williams Park with with your kids.

Roger Williams probably just rolled over in his grave. If he could speak from the grave, he'd probably be yelling, "Get the heck out of Rhode Island, this is out of control" !

how many young boys have been killed in just a little over a week in that neighbor hood!it isnt safe for anyone to be over in that part of the hood anymore, and thats no lie!i agree we should put bullet proff vest on our children, better yet lets all be better parents and know were our children are, when your out in the streets at 2 in morning somethings wrong,i think its time we make the parents of these little killers accoutable for their childs behavior!

Why was K's comment inappropriate? The behavior is INAPPROPRIATE!!

An isolated incident? Do you read the news?

Could happen anywhere? Doesn't happen in Barrington? Doesn't happen in Richmond?

Wake up!! As soon as we start accepting it - this will become acceptable!!

The problem is ....its NOT an isolated incident

Oh yea that's a reaily stupid comment. The shooting
is happing on Elemwood Ave Broad St basicaly all
around the southend of Providence, you do need a
bullet proof vest to walk anywhere in that area. Where are the police???

Isolated incident? You are naive. No, this type of violence is an all too regular occurrence in our capitol city. Look at recent articles about the Adelaide Ave and Somerset St shootings in just the past few weeks. There will be another shooting or stabbing soon in retaliation for this in the "street justice" fashion, or perhaps this one is the retaliation who knows....does it really matter? We need better policing of this city before things get further out of control.

It is a pity what has been happening in the South-end but shootings can and do happen even in the best parts of RI. It is life. Some people are to naive stating that you need a bullet proof vest to enjoy the park. I have lived in the area for 13 years and I'm still alive and uninjured. Even with no shootings the south end gets trashed all the time. We are supposed to be a state who helps one another and not who places the burden onlly on the city. Reality check.
