Shaw's Supermarkets is offering customers $20 or $30 of free groceries with the purchase of grocery gift cards worth $250 or $300 as part of a "refund rewards" program that starts today.

Shaw's starts the new refund sales program as the economic turmoil continues to pinch the wallets and pocketbooks of Americans, which has shoppers trading down on the prices they pay for all manner of goods.

"We know that consumers' budgets are strained like never before, so we're looking for ways to help our shoppers find value at the grocery store," Jeff Noddle, chairman and CEO of Supervalu Inc., the owner of Shaw's, said in a statement.

The refund program is similar to one Shaw's and other Supervalu stores ran last year when the Minnesota-based grocery giant worked to lure Americans flush with cash from federal stimulus checks. The gift cards can be purchased at customer-service counters at Shaw's locations. The new program ends April 15.
