Cynthia Giles, one of the state's leading environmental advocates and head of the Conservation Law Foundation's Rhode Island office, has been nominated by President Obama to take charge of enforcement at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The position would make her one of the top environmental regulators in the country, reporting directly to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

Giles said last night she cannot comment on the appointment until it is confirmed by the Senate. The post is assistant administrator for enforcement and compliance assurance.

Giles worked for the EPA from 1991 to 1997. She later served as head of the Bureau of Resource Protection at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. She has run the Rhode Island office of the CLF since 2005, leading efforts on climate change and coastal management issues.

Giles earned her law degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a master's degree from Harvard University.

CLF Interim President Bill Coleman said, "Cynthia's nomination to this key EPA position is great news for the environment, the public health and the rule of law."
