PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- Mayor David N. Cicilline signed an executive order this morning requiring that all new municipal buildings be certified as high-performing, "green" buildings. The mayor's order mandates that buildings meet one of two nationally recognized standards in energy efficient construction: the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). "This is about ensuring that we make smart decisions about school construction and municipal office space while creating green sector jobs for our residents," Cicilline said at a news conference on the rooftop of the Providence Career and Technical Academy, the first city building that will be green certified. The executive order is the first task that Cicilline has completed of his 30-point plan, called Operation Opportunity, to create a better job climate in the city. Cicilline said in his State of the City address in February that he intends to complete all those tasks within 18 months. Cicilline said that while the executive order on green building will result in an estimated 3 to 5 percent increase in overall construction costs, those expenses will be offset by the savings that will be incurred over time as a result of the energy efficiencies. When it is opened in the fall, the Career and Technical Academy on Broad Street will meet CHPS standards. It will feature an array of solar panels that power a solar-thermal hot-water system, high efficiency boilers and chillers, and high efficiency lighting fixtures. Nathan Bishop Middle School, when its renovation is completed in August, will also meet the standards. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. IDIOT, Cicilline. How about you say NO MORE municipal buildings for a while. No green building will ever be as clean as one that wasn't built.

Great idea! This is a great opportunity to kill two birds with one stone: 1. Go green and 2. Make green jobs. I await the local Limbaughs to attack the proposal!
