Citing a fall off in ticket sales and the slumping economy, Providence Black Repertory Company has canceled next month's production of August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean, the final offering of the season.

In an email from Donald W. King, the theater company's artistic director, King said that despite generous support from the community, ticket sales have "fallen far below our projections."

Black Rep has had a rocky season. The economic downturn earlier forced the theater to suspend its season until it could raise more money. It also laid off several staff members and slashed its budget by about one-third.
