NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) -- A Nantucket man has been charged with murder after authorities say he fatally stabbed a fellow painter in a bar fight.

The slaying of 39-year-old Scott Bernard is believed to be the island's first since 2004.

The Cape & Islands District Attorney's office says a passing motorist found Bernard's body on Cato Lane at about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Thomas Ryan was arrested Friday. District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said Ryan would be held over the weekend and arraigned Monday in Nantucket District Court.

It could not immediately be determined if Ryan has an attorney. There was no telephone listing for Ryan.

The police said Ryan and Bernard, who worked together, went to a local bar and later got into a fight. Authorities said Bernard was found with puncture wounds to his chest.

He was taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

The state Medical Examiner's office will conduct an autopsy.

The case remains under investigation.
