PC Friars, URI Rams look to keep March hopes alive

mcdermott0312.jpgBy 9 o'clock tonight, both the Providence College Friars and the University of Rhode Island Rams could be virtually eliminated from contention for an NCAA Tournament berth -- or they may be one step closer to a coveted spot in the Big Dance.

PC faces a do-or-die meeting at noon in New York City with old coach Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinals. Louisville is the number-one seed in the Big East Tournament, and Providence hasn't ever beaten the Cardinals since they joined the Big East in the 2005-06 season. If the Friars lose today, chances are they will be off to the NIT; a win, however, makes them a very solid candidate for the NCAA Tournament.

The game will be televised on ESPN. We'll be blogging the game, and you can also find a live box score on our PC Friars page.

The Rhody Rams get their Atlantic 10 Tournament run started at 6:30 tonight, when they face the Duquesne Dukes in Atlantic City. The game is a meeting of the conference's two highest-scoring teams, teams that played a dramatic regular-season game less than two weeks ago in Pittsburgh. Rhode Island won that game by two points. URI needs to at least win tonight and tomorrow night to be considered a serious contender for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

We'll have live coverage of URI-Duquesne, a game that can be seen on Cox Sports Channel, on our URI Rams page.
