PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Judicial Nominating Commission will meet Tuesday evening to interview six candidates who have applied to become the state's next Supreme Court chief justice. The interviews will be conducted in a public meeting of the commission, which is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. in Conference Room A on second floor of Department of Administration building off Smith Street. But members of the public who wish to comment on any of the candidates will have to wait until another hearing, scheduled for March 31 at 5:15 p.m. The commission has scheduled 20-minute interviews for each of the candidates for Tuesday. The candidates include all four members of the Rhode Island Supreme Court who served under Frank J. Williams, who abruptly stepped down as chief justice effective Dec. 31 but continues to sit on the bench. They are acting Chief Justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg, 58, and Associate Justices Paul A. Suttell, 60, Francis X. Flaherty, 62, and William P. Robinson III, 69. Also on the interview list are Superior Court Judge Francis J. Darigan Jr., 66, who was a finalist for the position in 2000 when Williams was chosen; and the United States Attorney for Rhode island for the last 4½ years, Robert Clark Corrente, 52. A 20 minute interview for a Supreme court chief justice in RI should be just about right...not much of a pool to choose from.
