New efforts to solve R.I.'s drinking water shortages

Growing concerns among state officials and environmental advocates about periodic drinking water shortges, particularly in the summer, have prompted studies, task forces and unsuccessful legislation. Finally solutions are being offered.

Rep. Frank G. Ferri, D-Warwick, introduced a bill today that incorporates the most acceptable elements of several competing bills that died in the last General Assembly session.

Also, the Rhode Island Water Resources Board, the agency that coordinates water suppliers and water supplies in the state, announced this morning that it selected a new general manager to replace the one it fired last October.
Kenneth Burke, a civil engineer who has worked as public works director in Westerly and Cranston, a project manager for the state Department of Transportation, succeeds Juan Mariscal. (See earlier posting below.)

Sheila Dormandy, head of the Coalition for Water Security, said State House leaders tell her this is the year things will finally come together and a bill will be passed.

"I think we're in good shape right now," said Dormandy. "We have heard from all quarters in the State House that everyone wants something to happen this year. We've done enough studies and commissions."
