Rhode Island will get $15.4 million in federal stimulus money for renovations and repair to military installations, with $12 million going for the overhaul of the Armed Forces Reserve Center in the Edgewood neighborhood of Cranston. The Rhode Island Congressional delegation announced the award today, with U.S. Sen. Jack Reed saying the federal funding means local jobs in the short run and an investment in "improved operational support for our troops" over the long haul. "At a time when the Pentagon is reassessing where and what it invests in, this is good news for the continued presence and growth of Rhode Island's military facilities and defense industry, which play an important role in our state's economy," Reed said. Besides the Esek Hopkins Armed Forces Reserve Center at 1 Narragansett St. in Cranston, five other military installations will benefit. They are: Newport Naval Station, $1.8 million for replacing the roof on the medical and dental clinic and $263,000 for repairing water damage inside the clinic; Air National Guard in Coventry, $509,000 for an insulation system and roof repair; R.I. National Guard Army Mounted Command in Providence, $540,000 for roof repair; Camp Varnum in Narragansett, $110,000 for insulation and $142,000 for window replacements, and Warwick Field Maintenance Shop, $65,000 for window repairs. |
