SCITUATE, R.I. -- The police have identified the man killed in a car crash on Route 6 early Monday as John W. Hanson, 57, of Brooklyn, Conn.

The police said that a witness to the 5:24 a.m. crash said he was drving behind Hanson's eastbound car for several miles, and did not see him drive erratically or go over the speed limit. He said that for some unknown reason, the car veered to the left as it approached Route 102, crossing two lanes of travel before hitting a tree 15 feet into the woods just east of Mary Hopkins Drive. There were no skid marks.

Sgt. Donald Delaere, the lead investigator in the accident, said Hanson had known medical conditions that might have contributed to the accident. The state medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy.
