PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- House Majority Leader Gordon D. Fox has withdrawn his complaint that someone broke into his State House office over the weekend, and Rhode Island State Police have dropped their investigation, they said today in a press release.

The press release recounted that State Police and Capitol Police investigated a possible unlawful entry into Fox's office after members of Fox's staff observed on Monday that paperwork and other items on his desk had been disturbed. Fox told investigators he secured his office last Friday.

State Police detectives found no signs of forced entry, no theft and no apparent or reported damage to state property. Interviews and investigations were conducted.

Yesterday, House Speaker William J. Murphy told detectives that a State House worker with permission to enter Fox's office had been there on Sunday.

Fox comfirmed that the worker had access to his office, and he withdrew his complaint. Based on these findings, coupled with the fact there was no forced entry, no theft, and no reported or apparent damage to state property, the investigation was closed.

State Police strongly suggest "that legislative offices tighten their internal control as it relates to access." The Department of Public Safety will conduct a security needs assessment, the release said.
