WARWICK, R.I. --- The woman who drove her car over the center lines, killing a Canadian man and badly injuring a Warwick woman in a 2005 accident on West Shore Road was sentenced today to a total of 15 years -- five to serve -- for driving under the influence of alcohol. Superior Court Judge Edwin Gale sentenced Angela Gerundio, 29, to 10 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions with three years to serve, seven years probation for the death of Cameron W. DeYoung, 23, of Bowmanville, Ontario. Gerundio was sentenced to a consecutive sentence of 5 years, two of them to be served on home confinement and the remaining 3 years suspended with probation. She will also have her drivers license suspended for 5 years upon her release from the ACI. A contrite Gerundio addressed the court prior to her sentencing. "Not a day goes by that I don't think about him," she told the court. "From the bottom of my heart, I am so very sorry and I would do anything to take that night back." Around 3 a.m. on June 18, 2005, Gerundio drove her 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier across the center lines, colliding with a 1995 Saturn driven by Ami Newsham, 25. DeYoung, Newsham's boyfriend, was in the passenger seat. Newsham suffered several broken bones but recovered after three months in the hospital, she told the court this morning. DeYoung, who recieved serious head injuries in the accident, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital shortly after the crash. Members of DeYoung's family from Canada flew in for the sentencing and sat in the front two rows during the proceedings. Newsham and DeYoung's mother, Sherry Keast, addressed the court this morning before Gale handed down the sentence. "The time has come for you to accept responsibility for what's happened," Keast said in her statement. "I hope you use whatever time you're given to think about Cam, the life he'll never have, and the pain we will have in our hearts every day. Our sentence surely exceeds anything that will be handed down." CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. Wow. She killed a man and injured another and serves 5 yrs in prison. Something is very wrong with the system. How can this be justice. On top of everything, she loses her license for 5 years when she get out. Is this suppose to set an example?

Kudos to Sherry for making a poignant comment that will stay with Angela. Nothing can be done to bring back Cam but a changed Angela can affect many. Missing Cam
