CRANSTON, R.I. -- Two down, five to go.

The School Committee has reached agreement with another employee group, approving a three-year contract that gives bus drivers, bus mechanics and trades people no raises for two years three-percent raises in the third.

Those same employees will also be paying more for their health insurance -- 10 percent, in the case of bus drivers, 12 percent in the case of bus mechanics and 13 percent in the case of trades people, said Ray Votto, the School Department's chief operating officer.

Until now, they had been paying 3 percent, he said.

School officials say the new contract, retroactive to July 1, 2008, will save $434,160 over three years, mostly through the higher employee health insurance premiums and the elimination of a health insurance buybacks that compensated employees who did not obtain health insurance through the city.

Along with a recently approved custodians contract, the agreement leaves the committee seeking concessions from five employee groups, including teachers.
