SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- The University of Rhode Island's tennis courts will get a $20,000 makeover after the women's tennis team was forced to cancel a game Thursday afternoon due to the unsafe conditions of the courts. The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team had traveled roughly an hour and a half to the university's Kingston campus Thursday but refused to play after finding badly cracked courts, according to the university's student newspaper, The Good 5 Cent Cigar. "I didn't think [the courts] were safe for my players to play on," Quinnipiac head coach Mike Quitko told the student newspaper. Todd McLeish, a university spokesman, said Friday morning the university will patch the cracks on the courts as a temporary fix. The estimated $20,000 to repair the courts will be drawn from an "asset protection fund" earmarked for maintenance purposes, McLeish said. Additional funds to rebuild the courts are being sought, McLeish said. But "that's not likely to happen anytime stoon," he noted. -- With reports from Journal Staff Writer Maria Armental The original version of this post, "URI opponent cancels match over cracked tennis courts," was filed at 11:06 a.m. |
