PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- WLNE-TV, Channel 6, laid off six employees this week, four full-time workers and two part-time, among them reporter Jennifer Gannon. "The recession continues to worsen, and like all businesses, we have to react," said Stephen Doerr, the station's general manager. Doerr said the station now employs between 85 and 90 people. Doerr said the station will also require workers to take unpaid days off, although he said the details have not yet been finalized. "We're working on a furlough program in an effort to save us from other layoffs," he said. Doerr said media companies, which are largely dependent on advertising for their revenue, are particularly vulnerable in a recession. He said he hopes no additional layoffs are necessary "but I've given up trying to look through the crystal ball." CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. I cannot believe Jennifer Gannon is gone! She was one of the only legit reporters on ABC6! I mean, besides Julie Ruditzky, all other general assignment reporters or a waste! They contribute absolutely nothing to the stories being reported and only get by on having over the top "handshakes" and supposed good looks. This isn't journalism anymore, it's a gossip show and WLNE, ABC6 is leading the pack! You have one reporter who has screwed up stories in the past (eg. see attached: http://thephoenix.com/BLOGS/notfornothing/archive/2008/07/25/ch-6-to-investigate-its-mistaken-report.aspx
You have reporters who constanly stammer and get so excited to be in tv that live shots make no sense! It's a total disappointment for Jennifer Gannon to have been laid off. Malini Basu should have been laid off instead! Oh wait, that's right...good looks, a complete dolt AND cheap labor! PERFECT candidate for being a reporter on ABC6!

I was never a huge fan on Jennifer Gannon's reporting. She seemed a bit stiff to me. Without her, ABC 6 has a more interesting staff.

I could care less about the whole ABC6 staff. Interesting how? Because now the whole staff has reached their subpar standards? Or interesting because it has turned into an entertainment show rather than a news medium? Like Facebook...what the hell is that about! If I want to get news fast its not going to be local news. You can just get fast news as it happens from the Associated Press website and it's news that is actually affecting Americans as a whole and not just the ghetto of RI. I mean, its like they're so full of themselves! Taking pictures of themselves and posting them like children from high school...puh-lease! It's a demoralization of the news media industry. It's supposed be "ABC6 NEWS"!...not "Look at me! I work at ABC6"!!...ABC6 won't last 5 years in this industry if it keeps on focusing on biased, subpar sensationalized news reports rather than REAL NEWS!

Well the AP is great for overall news coverage but when I'm looking for local news I would rather watch people who are friendly looking and act natural in front of the camera. I am not that interested in watching a woman who looks stiff and uncomfortable. Jennifer Gannon could be reading news straight from the AP that you deem "real news" and it still would seem forced and unnatural. Maybe with her lay off she will find another position she is more suited for, behind the scenes, maybe as assignment editor or something.

So, wait...you don't consider the AP real news? (GASP)....You've got to be kidding me!!! ALL THE LOCAL CHANNELS GET MOST OF THEIR NEWS FROM THE AP! That's all I have to say. No need for any further ignorant banter, unless you'd like to present factual information and not emotion fueled opinions.

When did I say the AP isn't real news? Can you read English? Apparently not...here is a quote from my comment:
"The AP is great for overall news coverage"
And yes, I am well aware that the AP is the source for most stories on local news. But I'm not sure how this became the point.
You asked me to state facts. I already have but you clearly couldn't understand those words either. I'll state them again to be more clear. Jennifer Gannon is a horrible reporter.

"I'll state them again to be more clear. Jennifer Gannon is a horrible reporter."
Are you kidding? Do you even watch? Horrible?
TV Reporters do their job out in front of the public. It's by no means an easy job, but I thought Jennifer was a pretty good news reporter. We got the facts, the whole story, without the song and dance. She was smart, asked the right questions, and presented the story to the viewer.
What more are you looking for?
Horrible Elizabeth? I don't think so.
