Update: Channel 10 cuts jobs; Ley, McGee leaving

CRANSTON, R.I. -- Channel 10, WJAR-TV, announced Monday it has cut more 12 jobs, adding to the 12 already announced in December, including those of chief meteorologist Gary Ley, weekend anchor Kelley McGee, and news director Betty-Jo Cugini.

Ley, who has been with Channel 10 for 24 years, will make his last broadcast for the station at 6 p.m. tonight. McGee, a 13-year veteran, ended her tenure on Sunday. Cugini has been with the station for 22 years.

Others affected by the new round of layoffs include Barbara Beresford, director of marketing, and Jeff Walkes, vice president of sales.

The 12 cuts announced in December, which took effect Monday, were made possible by automation of the production process.

Meteorologist John Ghiorse, a Rhode Island institution, retired in February.

"Today is a day of very tough goodbyes," said station manager Lisa Churchville. "These are loyal and wonderful people, so that's very tough."

Churchville said Ley and McGee "have known for a while" that they would be laid off and both agreed to "forfeit the remainder of their contracts," which were not due to expire soon.

All the laid off workers, including the on-air employees, will receive severance packages based on their years of service, Churchville said.

She declined to outline the terms or say how much the layoffs were expected to save the station, which, like other media outlets, has been hit hard by the "unprecedented economic challenges" of the recession.

"We very much regret having to take this step," Churchville said in a written statement. "The regional economy continues to contract. Both businesses and consumers continue to reduce spending and our advertising revenues have been adversely affected at unprecedented levels . . . parting with valued employees is all the more painful in light of the strong contributions they have made."

Channel 10 is owned by Richmond, Va.-based Media General Inc., which also owns 18 other network-affiliated stations, most of them concentrated in the Southeast. Although WJAR has long been the number-one station in the Providence market, the company's Web site showcases its top-rated Florida station.

The company also owns 24 daily newspapers, including The Tampa Tribune, the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal.

On Monday, the company's stock dropped 13 percent to close at $1.82, a decline of 87 percent in the past year, when Media General was trading for $14.02 per share.

The layoffs of Ley and McGee leave Channel 10 with a staff of three meteorologists and 10 reporters and anchors, according to the station's Web site. It also has three sports people.

Churchville said the station has no plans to reduce its new programming. The only change will be that its one-hour weekend show, instead of being all live, will mostly be produced during the weekdays, with some live cut-ins for up-to-the-minute news.

"We aren't cutting back on local programming, but cutting back on live local programming," she said.

I grew up in the area, but recently moved to the Boston area after graduating college last May.

NBC10 News was my favorite news station, as I was a young girl who was always interested in the news.

Gary Ley always made the weather worth watching. I used to love watching him and Doug White go back and forth during the weather reports.

He will be missed, as well the rest of the employees laid off.

This is very sad!

Avid watcher said:

Too bad Kelly bates can't be the one going instead of Gary Ley

JF CAR said:

GARY LEY =DO YOU NOT HAVE HAVE ANY PRIDE LEFT

Tina Thompson said:

I wish that Channel 10 would re-consider their decision to lose Gary Ley. I think that they are making a big mistake. Gary is beloved in this state!

B Russell said:

Too bad. They should trim the corporate pork out first and keep Gary Ley.

smb said:

This is horrible! Weekend morning news programs gone, Mario, Kelly M, now Gary Ley??!! Are you keeping that lollipop kid Joe Kayada? Channel 10 has fallen to the depths.

Robin10231 said:

who will tell us there is a 50% chance of rain

k said:

Would much rather see Patrice Wood leave! She's been there too long and is..well...stale. Will miss Gary Ley! Why not get rid of RJ Heim?

joedice said:

again there goes a great weather person..they say john g retired,,i think he might have got the ax too. what is wrong with these big corps.. ..that,s the thanks u get gary..i will switch to another channel...maybe gary will to..

Lois said:

I think channel 10 is making a BIG MISTAKE in letting Gary Ley go. I turn to 10 just to wach him for weather and his off hand comments. With all the bad news he brings a chuckle to me!!!

Allie B said:

Bye Bye Gary Ley.

Hello Mark Searles!!!!

:)

gg said:

Kelly Bates rocks. And who says Gary didn't want to leave? He'll go to Florida or Arizona where he can be right more often....

JB said:

Channel 10 has gone south in a big way ever since Media General bought it...

Dianne B. said:

Are you people thinking straight? Gary Ley is the back bone of the weather department!!!

Richard Hodges said:

Sorry to hear Kelley McGee and the rest are leaving

Unbelievable said:

I can't believe channel 10 is doing this. Gary is such a loyal person who isloved by all. I was laid off after 20 years at my job. It is too bad all the companies are laying off people who helped them get to where they are today. Shame on you channel 10.

robfs said:

Too bad the economy continues to wreck havoc here in Rhode Island! for what it's worth, I still miss Franz Laubert, Dick Wood, Jack Cavanaugh. The BEST!

Dan said:

Instead of axing their top people, they should use the FIFO rule if these senior people who give Channel 10 their quality would agree to the pay cuts. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

mark said:

Cut the budget by 1 million per year. Let Gary Ley go=$300,000+ per year. Seems like a good business decision since he really is not that good, or enjoyable to watch. The time of big fat contracts seem to be over for corperate TV. The "stars" are falling

Paula said:

Gary will be greatly missed. He was such a big asset to channel 10. Why not let kelly bates or RJ Heim go. They are to stale for me. I always liked channel 10. Well I will be watching Tony Patraca from now on. I am switching to Channel 12

MB Arnold said:

Ley, McGee, why not Bates and Heim. Looks like you will be experiencing to major loses. Valuable employees and loyal viewers.

RISailor said:

If Gary Ley is doing the weather I switch to WPRI. I can't stand Gary Ley. They should have let him go a long time ago.

robfs said:

Can we bring back Barry Diamond?? Oops, think he was a sportscaster? Entertaining for all the wrong reasons!

jack daniels said:

Gary was all about Gary and wont be missed in this house

john said:

Lisa Churchville ought to be the one to go. She has overseen the downward tumble of Channel 10, not Ley and the rest.

Mary said:

This is so crazy I've heard it all now. My housband was booted after working for a company for 15 years, made the company over a million dollars in 8 months. His work ethic and dedication is incredible and the company didn't even call him. If I didn't have a great job I would of left this state already!

UNBELIEVABLE

Jimy Wilcox said:

Good luck Gary, one of the best forecasters in RI! He is the only local meteorologist that recognizes wind direction and the importance it plays in forecasting RI weather. A few brief examples, when T-Storms are severe in western New England that are marching east towards RI, he quickly points out the stability the maritime breeze off the water is stabalizing the atmosphere and the storms will weaken because of this whereas other forecasters tell you to immediately go to your basement. Also, he calls temperatures, when there is a northeast wind, to a tee. Case in point last week he was the only forecaster saying it would be in the 40's along the MA coast but closer to 60 in western RI to which he was right on.

Seeing RJ Heim and his wild temperature predictions (sometimes it seems as if he's randomly guessing) and Kathy Bates "dress for these temperature windchills" only brings to the forefront how good Gary is!

Nicole said:

So sad to see Gary have to leave. I agree, Kelly Bates to the curb! Maybe if there is enough of an uproar they'll change their minds.

Christine said:

I happen to be one person that will be switching to Channel 12. I think Channel 10 is making a big mistake with letting go Gary Ley. I hope he shows up at a rival station!!

Sharyn said:

I think Kelly Bates is great and teaming her with Frank was just perfect....they make my morning wonderful so please don't consider touching this dynamic duo...

loverj said:

Gary Ley probably makes a top salary....Kelly Bates and RJ Heim are probably cheaper.

Paul D. said:

Goodby Gary Hello Tony. I giess channel 10 does not know where the talent lies. Gary will be dearly missed by my family. We switch to Tony on occasion and he is also a pleasure just not s entertaining. Bu tnow he will be the man Goodby 10 hello 12.

Susan said:

Kelley McGee was a bright spot in an otherwise set of dull news readers......Jaenig is at least pleasing to the eye/ear.
Valicenti looks like his clothes are too tight. And the daily morning clown has no class at all.....

And those are just some of the reasons I don't watch NBC 10!

John Ryan said:

who cares

Bibbit said:

You mean people still watch the local news? I stopped doing that so long ago I can't even remember. There's plenty of easier, quicker ways to get the news. Sitting around waiting for a TV station to give it to you is not my cup of tea.

Cara said:

Absolutely dumpRJ and keep Gary Ley! I watch 10 ONLY for Ley and now there's no reason.Bye !

Frank Martin said:

What a disaster! They can't tell me ad revenues are down that much. Kelly Bates looks awful in the morning-what are they thinking? And Betty Jo Cugini was a loyal top notch news director. Kelly Mcgee was one of my favorites. I'm turning to channel 12-Bye bye 10.

Damien J. said:

For everyone bashing WJAR for these decisions, no one a WJAR made these choices. These were dictated by their cash strapped owners, Media General. The reason Gary let go was simple, he made the most money. They gave no thought to his popularity in this decision.

Alice said:

I stopped watching channel 10 regularly years ago - Gary Ley is an insufferable bore and I cannot stand the fake sympathetic voice of Patrice Wood. She should go too! If Gary Ley made 300K a year, he was incredibly over paid.

Matt said:

Yeah it's a business decision, not based on popularity. None of you can see that? Ley made the most $ in the RI market for Media General. And Bibbit, maybe some of us don't have high speed Internet and have to rely on TV and print to get our news fill, ever think of that?!

My cup of tea is reading and watching all different news sources and make the best assessment myself.

Karen J. said:

I tend to sleep in on the weekend...when did Mario leave?
Will miss Gary, but my husband saw it comin' a mile away!
I was already beginning to lean toward channel 6 anyway. They keep it less stressful. (hint hint)

Hugo said:

Keep cutting - maybe we'll get back to 10 minute local news days or perhaps it could crawl along the bottom of the screen during the national news.

Helen said:

Obviously, quality does not count any longer. General Media does not realize that they have just knocked Channel 10 off as the best news and weather station in the area. This is terrible. I can think of other people at Channel 10 to lay off instead of Gary and Kelley. Channel 12 here I come!

Monarch said:

Too bad you can't get rid of Taracani....he used to be good.

Deb in Cranston said:

Channel 10 is making a big mistake cutting some of their most likable personalities---Gary Ley, Kelley McGee (and Mario too?). I'm speechless and bereft. These were people I always enjoyed on a newscast. But now that they are gone, I may be gone too. Good luck, Gary, Kelley (and Mario?). I hope to see you again soon.

Linda Brault said:

Kelly McGee was so gracious when she made the announcement that she is leaving Channel 10 after so many years. She is an accomplished news person and will surely be missed. A few years ago, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and delivered to my Mom once a week. She made Mom's day! I will certainly miss her smiling face and pleasant personality on Channel 10 (which, by the way, I have been watching for 55+ years!)

JoAnn said:

We'll miss you Gary ....

JoAnn said:

We'll miss you Gary .... Good luck wherever you go....

Pat P. said:

Best wishes to Gary Ley. He's been a lively personality to watch, and has done some very nice work with school kids in the area. He will be missed.

lisa said:

Gary is a class act! What a gracious guy to handle himself like that for his last forecast at 10. Best of Luck to him in his future endeavors!

chris said:

Are you kidding? I grew up with gary ley. I agree with all the above comments abour keeping gary ley HOWEVER, they (Betty& Gary) are making the big bucks and are close to retirement. They probably will get a juicy severance. It makes sense as a buisness. It's cheaper to keep others who are making less..... but i won't watch this station anymore!!!

Confused.... said:

Best of luck to Gary Ley and Kelley McGee and all the others management has let go. I am totally disappointed with the people leaving and due to some remaining, will probably look around for a new station. In this day and age of all the good things people are losing on a daily basis, a friendly reliable face that we have enjoyed for so many years is another piece of comfort leaving. There had to be another combination of employees to get rid of instead of who may be among highest paid because they deserve to be. I have watched channel 10 since the age of 15. 30 years later I have watched new faces and have been saddened over the passing or leaving of others. This is just too much now.

lulu said:

Say it isn't so.... stunned by the announcement
tonite that our Gary is leaving, also, the changes to the weekend news... the comforting routine of knowing who will be doing the news &
weather is gone. Too much change, John, Gary,
Mario, Kelly... will miss you all, Good Luck and
God Bless, best wishes to all of the others
who have had to be let go.

Anonymous said:

I wish Gary and Kelley the best. I enjoyed watching both of them. I am annoyed by some of the negative comments people are making about them and their co-workers. Why are people so mean during difficult times????

Betty D said:

Goodbye NBC 10 News you have dug your grave

Frank said:

BAD ECONOMICS. Re-hire Gary Ley, terminate all other weather reporters. Failure to rehire your most competent meteoroligist while keeping some more clearly and completely incompetent will drive your ratings through the floor. Unless your goal is to ultimately turn off your transmitters, go for quality. Sincerely, Your Friend.

Trish said:

Out of all the people you give the boot to Gary Ley???? Are you out of your mind? Do you know how much of an audience you will lose? I hope that someday the same is done to you and see how you feel after giving all those years of service to a company and getting nothing in return. We don't want to see some 12 yr old kids doing the weather. We want someone who has experience and that person is Gary! I also don't believe that John G retired because I think he knew he was getting the boot too. So much for loyalty....

Looks like I won't be watching Channel 10 any longer.

Betty & Mike said:

We cannot believe that you let go of Gary after 24 years of service. We are truly disappointed in 10 for doing this to someone who is dedicated to RI weather and is one of the major reasons we "Turn to Ten". You have a number of meteorologists at the station with less seniority (and much less believability) that should have been considered before Gary. We think we will search for a new station to watch!

Ralph said:

Are you kidding me...getting rid of Gary Ley?? He's one of the best when it comes to the big storms! He's a very talented meteorologist, and I hope he gets picked up by another local station. He's soooo much better than RJ....no comparison!

Kelly McGee was also a very bright spot on Channel0....are you TRYING to lose viewers??!!

j-dog said:

I'd rather watch the Weather Channel; much rather look at Alexandra Steele and Stephanie Abrams.

Beverly said:

That's too bad. Anyone losing their job is horrible. Sometimes these people we watch on TV become a part of our families. Gary Ley was enjoyable to watch and I'll miss him. The only other people I rely on for a good forecast are Tony Petraca and TJ DelSanto on Channel 12. I guess I'm headed over there for now.

PC said:

Really sorry to hear that Gary Ley got laid off. He seemed like such a good guy, and really cared about the viewers who were watching to make sure they got the most up to the minute information.

He's one of the best around...and you let him go...bad choice! (Have you watched some of your other employees on camera? Some of them are terrible at thier job....do they pictures on someone??)

Rich said:

I like Frank and Kelly in the morning. I will be sorry to see Gary go.

Titi said:

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! GARY LEY IS THE REASON TO WATCH CHANNEL 10. PLEASE SAY IT ISN'T SO, YOU'RE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE MANAGEMENT PEOPLE!CHANNEL 6 HERE WE COME! AS CHANNEL 6 GETS BETTER YOU DO THIS, CRAZY FOR SURE! OUR SINCERE BEST WISHES TO GARY AND CHANNEL 6!!!

Renee said:

I have been watching more of channel 12
lately, ever since 10 starting cutting
corners and laying off staff, the quality
of the news has been terrible. Quite a few
mistakes. It is too bad that they show no
appreciation for their long time employees,
like Kelley and Gary. I didn't even know
about Mario.

Dor said:

I luv U Gary.

robfs said:

BRING BACK GINGER CASEY. WE NEED A FRESH FACE IN THE ANCHOR'S CHAIR. HAVE OBAMA DO TO MEDIA GENERAL WHAT HE DID EARLIER TODAY TO RICK WAGONEER AT GM.

SLC said:

Way too bad for Gary and RI. Not going to bash the remainders. Do have to say that consistency between weather personalities was noticeable.

WJAR management has been a source of contention for me in the past. News? What News?

Love the whole team though. Firing one of the key players is a mistake, in my opinion.

Love and will miss Gary. Fan since the 80s. Go get them Gary. Cant wait to see your next incarnation, Ill be there.....

Mary said:

Channel 10 is making a big mistake cutting some of their best people, Gary Ley, Kelley McGee and Mario Hilario. There is no loyalty left in this world. Get rid of the others, not the ones that made this TV station what it is today!
I think it is time for me to say goodbye and hello to ABC6 or WPRI12.

Ed Ames said:

Get rid of Frank Coletta. His daily mention of 'scarole is sickening. And his intolerance of "those dastardly computers". Boorish. Don't blame technology when it doesn't work. It just proves you don't know how to operate a computer.

Jim and Carol in Albion said:

It is sad news to see such dedicated people lose their jobs. Channel 10 has always been our choice for watching the news, weather and sports reporting. Gary is to us the best meteorologist in the area and his humor made it enjoyable to watch.

Best of luck to both Gary and Kelley.

Jerry said:

What a shame... and to everyone directing anger or disappointment towards channel 10, know that it's not their call.

I strongly feel that the staff at NBC10 (not the parent company, Media General) really does care about providing the community with quality programming, from the photographers and reporters on the street, to the management back at the station. The only thing that is limiting them at this point is pressure from higher ups, due primarily to financial strains. It’s my hope that some day things can return to normal, so the local stations can spend more time telling stories about our community and sharing them through TV and the web. They won’t be able to effectively do that without the resources that are being eliminated now.

That being said, the station has been moving south since NBC sold it to Media General. Hopefully the team that’s remaining over there at channel 10 will continue to work to provide us all with fair journalism, especially in times like this, whether is be through television newscasts or various forms of web distribution. We’re counting on them more than ever.

Tony Fuzek said:

This has come as a complete shock to see two very fine on air people let go. Both Kelly and Gary were always a pleasure to watch and listen to. I think that I would have prefered to see Ms. Wood go as she has become tiresome in her delivery. I had been watching Channel 12's Patrick Little for sports, now it looks like I will be watching both weather and sports on 12. If that gets to be too much trouble, I will watch 12 for the whole show. It seems that the people at the top made the wrong decision this time around and they will lose viewers which always came back to 10. I think that Gary would have made a them an offer they could not refuse. Too bad, I had been a viewer of Channel 10 for over 40 years, its too bad that it has to end!

Jane said:

Can't believe my eyes and ears. Weather without Gary and weekend news without Kelly and Mario? I think management is making a big mistake. Revered by all of Rhode Island and some of my favorites. All of you will be missed!I hope this turns out to be a blessing for all of you. Channel 12, here I come!

Goodbye Gary, Goodbye Channel 10.
Channel 10 was our default channel, every time the T.V came on it was channel 10. Not anymore.

Henry said:

It's all about the money, folks. That's what happens with absentee ownership. They have no regard for personalities or loyalties or their viewers. It's all about the dollar.

Rob Farrell said:

What "i"m thinking" is like all bussiness, get rid of the ones that are good, but make to much money. But the exec. will not cut thier own pay? good luck to all "the family" at 10.

Michele said:

This is yet another sign of our terrible economy. These decisions made about who will go and who will stay are all about the bottom line; not about talent, loyalty, tenure, entertainment value, etc. These types of lay-offs have happened across the board in every profession. It is so unfortunate that a person cannot feel secure that they will have a job next week despite their length of service, and job performance.

john from Middletown said:

Goodbye Gary Ley and Channel 10 forever.

Martha Leone said:

Gary Ley ? ? Are you kidding me? What a STUPID decision that was. Gary is the best. I am sure it was a $$$$$$ decision, but DUMB just the same. There are others there that shouldn't be. My family will NEVER watch channel 10 news again. Good-bye Gary.....so long channel 10.

June said:

Can't believe they cut Gary Ley. They don't care about the local people--just bottom line.

Channel 10 will never be the same.
Hope you get another job, Gary. We wish you
all the luck.

How about bringing him back like they did to
Steve Leveille on WBZ Radio. They listened to the
people...power to the people

Judy said:

The owners of channel 10 should be ashamed of themselves! I am outraged! Gary Ley was the main reason I chose to watch that station and I have been a dedicated viewer for over 20 years. Let's face it, we can get our news and weather from a multitude of media - I chose 10 for Gary.

I was suspicious when they brought in all those newbies doing weather and as suspected the station had a bigger bottom line in mind. Just as unscrupulous companies are doing everywhere, get rid of the higher paid, seasoned veteran and get lower paid newbies.

All the best to Gary - a better door will open, but I will miss you. It's like losing a family member.

Ta-ta channel 10, I'm turning to 12!

J said:

Love Frank Coletta's personality, he brings so much warmth and makes the local news personal for his viewers.
Mario Hilario is excellent, a true Rhode Islander.
He seems caring and very natural on camera.
Ginger Casey, she was great, huge loss.

Lois Belanger said:

Frank Coletta leaves, that will be it for me.....I still watch Frank in the morning, he is my guy, he is down to earth, a real guy!!!!! But at night I switched to channel 12.... Hope Gary gets a better job, and teaches channel 10 a lesson, if they all would have taken a cut in pay, especially the big wheels they could have kept him......A very bad decision!!!!!!!!

Ed said:

I am sad to hear about Gary Ley.
Channel 10 is no longer my station. Why did they not get rid of some of the other people, especially the young dude, Brian, that talks like he has a mouthful of marbles....pathetic!

You will be missed Gary and Channel 10 will suffer for it in the end.
