Arkwright to pay $98,500 for air pollution violations

The owners of the former Arkwright Inc., which straddles the Scituate-Cranston line, have agreed to pay $98,500 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act at their manufacturing plant in Fiskeville.
Arkwright, which was part of Oce Imaging Supplies, operates a plant making digital imaging media -- primarily paper and polyester film -- that is used in ink jet printers and for blueprints and other specialty applications. The local plant has since been sold, and now does business as Arkwright Advanced Coatings.
The EPA filed a complaint and recommended a fine of $200,000 in October, based on previous visits to the plant that found it wasn't capturing all of the volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants given off by one of its coating lines. A subsequent visit found that the company was violating federal reporting and notification requirements.
Since then, the EPA says, all the problems have been corrected.
