American Power Conversion says it will move its Rhode Island manufacturing operations from West Warwick to Pennsylvania, eliminating 75 jobs in Rhode Island. Company spokeswoman Sarah Dereniuk said Wednesday that APC's West Warwick manufacturing facility will close in July, but that APC's corporate headquarters will stay in West Kingston. Dereniuk said the company doesn't want to discuss a number of questions, including what it manufactures in Rhode Island, how many jobs will remain and whether some of the company employees in Rhode Island might get jobs in Middletown, Pa., where the manufacturing operations will be moved. She said that over all 100 jobs will be "impacted," including the 75 jobs eliminated and the rest moved. A local technology startup founded by three Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers in 1981, APC has grown into an international company with 12,000 employees. APC manufactures equipment to manager power for computers and other electronic equipment, particularly for insuring an uninterrupted power supply to data losses, hardware damage and downtime. It was bought in 2007 by a French firm, Schneider Electric. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. So much for all the tax breaks this company received from the State! Condolences to those Rhode Islanders who worked for this company that has been leveraged by greed.

What is with the public's correlation of good management to "greed"? RI has been driving companies out of the state for years. When we install tax policy that can compete maybe we can start to reverse this trend. But the external attribution needs to stop. Do not blame APC for leaving - I’m sure cutting jobs was the last thing it wants to do. The negative publicity, high cost, and loss of talent are not advantageous. Try looking to our friends on Capitol Hill for answers and you also may want to bail on the sinking ship that is the ocean state.

Thanks to the French, APC will be handled like all the other US companies that the French have purchased and screwed up. Ask the former employees of RCA Consumer Electronics that Thomson purchased. They are all out of jobs and the company is basically on life support.
The remainder of the US workers, including management, should get out when they can.
