NARRAGANSETT, R.I. - Lt. junior-grade Francis L. Toner IV was killed Friday by an Afghan National Army soldier who opened fire on Toner and another sailor at a camp in northern Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said. The 26-year-old Narragansett man was scheduled to rejoin his wife, Brooke, on Wednesday. "He loved God and his country," said his father, Frank. Toner, a former prom king and running back, helped distribute shoes and clothing to Afghan children, his father said. Lt. Florence B. Choe, 35, of El Cajon, Calif., was also killed in the attack. Toner and Choe supported Operation Enduring Freedom, the government said. -- Paul Davis CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. My heart and thoughts are w/ the family of Lt. Toner and Lt. Choe. I had the honor of serving w/ Lt. Choe and her husband while stationed in Okinawa, Japan w/ 3D MED BN 2004-2006. They may not remember me but I remember them, they were a beautiful couple. You are both the definition of true American heroes. Your honor and sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten. It is because of people like you that make me proud to serve my country and be part of the United States Navy. May you both rest in peace. -HM3 (FMF) Jennifer Voreh

I cannot believe this has happened. I worked with Lt. Toner and Lt. Choe at Camp Mike Spann just a month ago. Frank was an outstanding young engineer and a pleasure to serve with. Lt. Chow was very proud of her son. My heart goes to out their families. I know in the heart of hearts that could have easily been me.
Their lives will never be forgotten!
