Some $14.5 million more in federal stimulus money is coming to Rhode Island to improve energy efficiency in building and transportation projects. The money, announced by the state's congressional delegation, is in addition to the $44 million released earlier in the month for the State Energy Program and its Weatherization Assistance Program. Funding for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program is part of the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The money will go directly to municipalities for such work as energy audits, solar panels on government buildings and energy efficient retrofits. The biggest grant, $9.5 million, goes to the state Energy office, which must pass 60 percent on to the smaller communities. The specific grants range from $1.7 million for Providence to $77,900 for the Narragansett Indian tribe. |
