PROVIDENCE. RI --- An Olneyville man learned that tossing a loaded gun from his car's sunroof was not the best way to hide a weapon from the police.

Two police officers were checking a report of shots fired in the area of Manton Avenue and Julian Street last night when they suddenly heard a squeal of tires behind a house at 134 Putnam St., just a block away. Officers Leonel Pichs and Jonathan Primiano ran over just as a silver car revved out of a driveway there and nearly hit them, said Maj. Thomas Oates.

The two officers ran after the car, yelling at the driver to stop, Oates said. When the car halted, the officers shone their lights inside on the driver, Julio Aldana, who promptly opened his sunroof and allegedly threw a loaded .22 gun out of the car, Oates said.

It didn't go far. The gun landed on the car's roof and stayed there, Oates said.

Aldana put the car in reverse and sped backward into the driveway -- and smashed one of the tires into a wall, the police said.

At that point, the 32-year-old man gave up.

Aldana, of 132 Putnam St., was charged with carrying a pistol without a license; the police are investigating whether he was involved in the reported shots fired. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is researching the weapon.
