JOHNSTON _ A 68-year-old Smithfield man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for observation after he was ejected from the rear hatch window of his 1998 Suburu wagon. His car rolled over a guardrail and hit a light post this afternoon on the Route 6 West ramp that connects to the 295 access road.

State Police Lt. Joseph DelPrete, said Anthony Nicoletti, was lucky because when he was thrown from the car, bushes on the other side of the guardrail broke his fall. Not far from the bushes is an long incline that leads down to Hartford Avenue, he said.

"He is a lucky old man," DelPrete said.

Police found Nicoletti 20 feet from his car on the grass near the bushes, DelPrete said. It had not been determined whether he was wearing a seat belt. DelPrete said Nicoletti was coherent and was taken by Johnston Rescue to Rhode Island Hospital.

DelPrete said that the police are investigating whether speed lead to the accident or whether medication affected Nicoletti's driving.

Nicoletti's condition was unavailable.
