RI high court to discuss E. Providence teachers' appeal

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rhode Island Supreme Court this morning is scheduled to discuss in chambers an appeal of the teachers' union, which seeks to stop the school department from cutting teachers' salaries by nearly 5 percent and deducting from paychecks one fifth the cost of health insurance premiums. Those reductions were imposed Jan. 16.

The justices are expected to talk about whether the high court will hear the complaint of the teachers, who seek temporary relief until the issue can be heard on its merits by the state Labor Relations Board.

The School Committee has argued that the court should not intervene because the pay cuts do not cause "irreparable harm."

Any decisions made in private conferences of the Supreme Court are transmitted by court order, according to court spokesman Craig N. Berke.

In spite of the efforts of East Providence, this issue is now in the proper forum. Let the merits of each side be heard and justice done.

The proper forum was the school committee's decision. They did what they were legally bound and entitled to do. Good for them for having the courage to do it.
